Question

What kind of intermolecular forces act between a hydrogen chloride molecule and a nitrogen trichloride molecule?

Note: If there is more than one type of intermolecular force that acts, be sure to list them all, with a comma between the name of each force.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The compounds given are hydrogen chloride i.e HCl and nitrogen trichloride i.e NCl3.

Since in HCl, there is a polar H-Cl bond which will give overall net dipole moment to the HCl molecule.

Hence HCl is a dipole.

And since the H is not attached to high electronegative element like F, N or O in HCl.

Hence it can not form H bonds.
