Question

What Rh blood types must the mother and the fetus have
before HDN can occur?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Rh factor is playing a very important role in the identification of blood group. A protein that is found on the surface of red blood cells is known as Rh protein. If the Rh protein is present on the surface of the blood cell, the blood is Rh-positive. If the Rh is absent the blood is Rh-negative. It is playing a major role during pregnancy as well. It can cause haemolytic disease in the newborn.

Step 2

Haemolytic disease in the newborn is caused by the Rh factor in the blood cell, where the red blood cells in the baby get degenerated very fast. It is caused by the presence and absence of the Rh factor. It mainly occurs when the mother is Rh-negative and the father of the baby has Rh-positive blood. So, here the baby is Rh-positive and when the mother is Rh-negative and she carries a baby with Rh-positive. Here the body of the mother recognises the baby as a foreign particle. Because of the immune system, they release the antibodies to attack the baby. This leads to the HDN.
