What is judicial review?

Judicial review is the ability of a country's courts to analyse the activities of the legislative, executive, and administrative branches of government and determine whether such actions are in accordance with the constitution. Inconsistent actions are ruled unlawful and so null and void. In this sense, the institution of judicial review is dependent on the presence of a written constitution. Because the doctrine differs by country, the manner and scope of judicial review may change among countries.
