Horizontal gene transfer is also known as HGT. It is the transfer of the genetic material that takes place from one species to another by the different mechanisms rather than the normal vertical transmission from parent(s) to the offspring.

HGT is thought to be more widespread in prokaryotes than the eukaryotes. But the fact is only approximate 2% of the prokaryotic genome might be transferred by this process.
