When does anaerobic metabolism occur in skeletal muscle
and what are the effects of this?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Anaerobic metabolism can be defined as the process in which the production of adenosine triphosphate or energy molecules occurs without the presence of oxygen. This metabolism occurs when there is a lack of oxygen or less oxygen available in the blood to carry out the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate. In this metabolism, lactic acid is produced as a by-product that has other effects on the body like causing pain and cramps. This lactic acid decreases the pH which results in cramps.
