Question

Which autonomic nerve plexus innervates the pelvic organs?
a. cardiac plexus
b. esophageal plexus
c. hypogastric plexus
d. inferior mesenteric plexus

Expert Solution
Step 1-Introduction

Neurons or nerves are cells involved in transmitting information in the form of impulses. Neurons make up the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (all peripheral nerves).

A branching network of nerves that intersect one another is known as a nerve plexus. Afferent (sensory) neurons and efferent (motor) neurons that originate from the intersecting of blood vessels with the anterior rami of spinal nerves give rise to nerve plexuses.

Each nerve plexus is involved in regulating the function of a specific region of the body. Nerve plexuses are broadly classified into spinal and autonomic nerve plexuses.

Step 2-Correct answer

The pelvis is the region that is located between the abdomen and thighs. The viscera (internal organs) of the pelvis are innervated by the hypogastric plexus. The hypogastric plexus is composed of the inferior and superior hypogastric plexuses. The superior hypogastric plexus is located in front of the bifurcation of the abdominal aorta. Sympathetic information to the pelvic viscera is carried by left and right hypogastric nerves. Pelvic splanchnic nerves provide parasympathetic fibers to the superior hypogastric plexus. The left and right hypogastric nerves extends as the paired inferior hypogastric plexus. The inferior hypogastric plexus continues as the uterovaginal plexus in women and prostatic plexus in men and innervate the corresponding organs. Hence, option c is the correct answer.
