Expert Solution
Introduction

The capacity of a solvent to induce cells to shrink or swell is referred to as tonicity. A semipermeable membrane permits just a small amount of ions or molecules to pass through it.

Osmosis is the process of moving water from a low-solute-concentration zone to a high-solute-concentration zone across a semipermeable membrane.

An isotonic solution has the same concentration of ions or molecules on both sides of a semipermeable membrane. A hypertonic solution is one that contains a higher concentration of solutes than the cells themselves. A hypotonic solution is a solution with a lower concentration of solutes than that found inside the cells.
