Question

Which of the following statements is TRUE? Overexpression of the X-chromosome in the somatic cells of males

a. leads to the formation of a Barr body in male cells' nuclei.

b. leads to cellular mosaicism in males hemizygous for an X-linked gene.

c. is characteristic of all XY systems of sex determination.

d. is the mechanism in flies to compensate for the higher dosage of X-linked genes in females as compared to males.

e. None of the above

Expert Solution
Step 1 X Chromosome.

Females posses two X chromosome and male possess one X chromosome.  The Y chromosomes is specific for males but the X chromosome is involved in the maintenance of house keeping genes and regulatory mechanisms.

Females possess two X chromosomes so there must be twice the number of genes products as noticed in males with only one X chromosome.

Step 2 Over expression of X chromosome in somatic cells

In flies such as Drosophilia, even though females has two X chromosomes , the gene products of both the male and female remained to be the same.

This rare phenomenon was termed as dosage compensation where the flies try to compensate the dosage difference between female and male by maintaining the level of X-linked genes to be equal. And hence overexpression of X chromosome is observed in somatic cells of males .
