Expert Solution
Step 1 Introduction
ATP produced in cellular respiration
"Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the primary source of energy for cellular processes in the body. It is produced during cellular respiration, which is the process by which cells convert the energy from food into a form that can be used by the cell. There are three main stages of cellular respiration: glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation".
- Glycolysis is the breakdown of glucose in the cytoplasm to produce two molecules of pyruvate and a small amount of ATP.
- The citric acid cycle, also known as the Krebs cycle or tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, occurs in the mitochondria and generates high-energy electrons that are used to produce ATP.
- Oxidative phosphorylation is the final stage of cellular respiration and occurs in the mitochondria, where the high-energy electrons generated in the citric acid cycle are used to produce the majority of ATP. This process involves the transfer of electrons from the high-energy electrons to oxygen, which results in the production of ATP.
- In total, cellular respiration can produce up to 38 ATP molecules from one molecule of glucose, depending on the conditions and the type of cell.
