Question

Write a balanced equation for the neutralization of stomach acid by NahCO3 .

Expert Solution
Step 1

Digestion is the process by which large food molecules are broken down to form small water-soluble food molecules that can be absorbed by the cells to perform cellular activities. Digestion involves both mechanical and chemical changes of the food molecule while they pass through the alimentary canal. In the stomach, enzymes and acids secreted help in the digestion of food. Hydrochloric acid secreted by the parietal cells of the stomach lowers down the pH to 1-3. However, bicarbonate present in the stomach helps to maintain a regulated pH.
