1) Typically, there are four main types of water pollutant which are: Organic compounds, inorganic compounds or materials, macroscopic pollutants, and pathogens.

2) All the above-mentioned pollutants affect the water quality in some way or the other. These pollutants can tremendously affect aquatic life, thus disrupting the natural food chain. Pollutants in water reduce the Biological and Chemical oxygen demand (BOD and COD) of water, thus enough oxygen is not available for fishes and other aquatic animals for breathing.
