Explain the generation and distribution process of electricity.

Explanation of Solution

Electricity acts as a midst of the transformation process as a technology and innovative disrupt model from generation to beyond the meter. It is a physical phenomenon that is associated with the motion and presence of the matter which has electric charge property.

The generation and distribution system includes three different stages. They are,

  1. 1. Generation process.
  2. 2. Transmission process.
  3. 3. Distribution process.

1. Generation Process

The electricity is generated in different ways from other energy types, based on the requirement of the energy type either DC or AC.

To generate electricity in small amount of DC energy, permanent magnets are preferable to crate the magnetic field, and by rotating the coils in the field small amount of current will flow through the coils by the effect of induced emf’s in the coil.

A Generator is used to convert the mechanical power into electric power in the power plant to generate large amount of power.

Generator works on the principle of “electromagnetic induction”. To produce the electricity, the input fuel energy is used to rotate the turbines mechanical energy which is connected to “the shaft with winding coils” known as rotor in magnetic field created by “the stator filed coils” energized by a small dc currents, while the turbine rotates, the rotor coils cuts the magnetic lines in the stator field then the currents flows through the rotor winding and emf’s induces across the rotor winnings, and it is collected by the special arrangement of the  carbon brushes, slip rings and commentator.

Power plants across our country can burn the fossil fuels namely oil, coal, and natural gases to create the mechanical energy, in thermal power plants.

The renewable resources namely solar, wind, and hydroelectric power can also be used to generate electricity, and this process is held in renewable energy farms. Typically the generated voltage is 25kV and process through the step-up transformer in order to increase the generated power voltage.

2. Transmission Process

The generated electricity is sent to the electric substations using the transmission lines. The transmission lines includes different ranges of high voltage values, that is 765kV, 500kV, 345kV, 230kV, and 138kV
