If you are planning to study civil engineering, investigate what is meant by dead load, live load, impact load, wind load, and snow load in the design of structures. Write a brief memo to your instructor discussing your findings.

To determine

Explain the meaning for the terms dead load, live load, impact load, wind load, and snow load in the design of structures.

Explanation of Solution

The meaning for the terms in civil engineering is stated below:

Dead load:

The dead load is also called as permanent load or static load. Dead load is the load which is predominantly associated with “the weight of the structure” itself, and the remaining stationary and constant weights such as permanent and non-structural partitions, floor plasterboards, surface materials, built-in cupboards, and other finishes in the structure.

Dead load would be used precisely for the cases when weight of the structure of the materials, the dimensions is known on the working drawings. Therefore, the dead load of the structure can determine accurately. By multiplying the volume of each and every individual section with the unit weight, the dead load of weight of the structure is calculated.

Live load:

The live load can also be called as imposed loads. Live loads include only the movable, dynamic, temporary and changeable things. Live loads includes the below movable objects,

  • People.
  • Cupboards.
  • Desks.
  • Chairs.
  • Filing cabinets.
  • Furniture and other equipment.

These objects altogether can impose the load on the structure for live loads. The intensity of such objects can be changes often and it depends on the day.

Impact load:

The impact load on the structure can be experienced when the moving body is stopped in the structure. The sudden load which is acting on the structure for a short duration is called as an impact load.

Due to motion, the movable object on the building can include certain kinetic energy. When the object or body comes at rest, the kinetic energy is transformed to the structure, and such dissipation of energy can be experienced as an impact load...
