Whether the lines L1& L2  are parallel, skew, or intersecting and if they intersect, find the point of intersection.

Explanation of Solution

1) Concept:

i) Two lines are parallel if their corresponding direction vectors are parallel.

ii) For the lines to intersect, there must be one value of t and s that produce the same point from the respective parametric equations.

iii) If lines are not parallel and intersecting then they must be skew.

2) Given:

L1:x1=y-1-1=z-23

L2:x-22=y-3-2=z7

3) Calculation:

The equations of lines are

L1:x1=y-1-1=z-23&L2:x-22=y-3-2=z7

The direction vector for the line L1is v1=1,-1, 3

The direction vector for the line L2is v2=2,-2, 7

Find v1×v2,

v1×v2=ijk1-132-27=-13-27i-132-2j+1-12-2k 

v1×v2=-7+6i--2-6j+-2+2k

v1×v2=-i+8j+0k0

Since, corresponding direction vectors are not parallel, the lines aren’t parallel.

By using two non - zero vectors, a & b are parallel if and only if  a×b=0

The lines aren’t parallel.

Comparing the line L1:x1=y-1-1=z-23&x-x0a=y-y0b=z-z0c  we get

x0,y0,z0=0,1,2 & a,b,c=1,-1, 3<
