d. Determine the total active force per unit length of the wall after the tensile crack occurs. Also find the location of the resultant.

The saturated unit weight γsat of the clay is 19.6kN/m3.

The undrained shear strength cu of the clay is 22kN/m2.

The surcharge pressure q applied on the top of the wall is 20kN/m2.

Calculation:

Determine the active pressure σa at the top of the wall using the formula.

σa=q2cu

Substitute 20kN/m2 for q and 22kN/m2 for cu.

σa=202(22)=2044=24kN/m2

Determine the surcharge pressure σo applied on the bottom of the wall using the relation.

σo=γsat×H+σo
