a) Polypropylene

Polyethylene is the simplest polymer formed from ethene. A section of polyethylene containing five molecules can be formed as follows:

CH2CH2-CH2CH2-CH2CH2-CH2CH2-CH2CH2

Propylene contains three methyl groups which are directly attached to the central carbon atom. It can be shown as follows:

The hydrogen atoms are replaced by methyl groups on alternating carbon atoms to produce polypropylene from polyethylene. It can be shown as follows:

b) Polyacrylonitrile

Polyethylene is the simplest polymer formed from ethene. A section of polyethylene containing five molecules can be formed as follows:

CH2CH2-CH2CH2-CH2CH2-CH2CH2-CH2CH2

Acrylonitrile contains nitrile groups which are directly attached to the central carbon atom
