Why do desert regions have large diurnal temperature variations?

To determine

The reason why desert regions have large diurnal variations in temperature.

Explanation

The greater diurnal temperature variations exhibited by the deserts is due to two principal factors namely, the absence of clouds in the sky and the absence of moisture content.

The clouds in the sky act as good reflectors of the solar radiations and absorbs only a minor part of it. Therefore, when the sky is cloudy, much of the incoming radiations from the Sun get blocked by reflection before reaching the Earth’s surface. This causes the penetration of only a small part of the incoming solar energy to reach the Earth’s surface. If the energy received is less, the corresponding reradiating of energy will be also less which in turn raises the temperature of the region by a less amount only.

Deserts usually have clear skies with no clouds. Hence, in the absence of clouds, especially during daytime, no reflection of solar energy takes place and much of the energy reaches the surface, gets absorbed, and reradiated back, thereby raising the temperature of the region largely, which would be greater than the normal value...
