What is the blood–brain barrier, and what is its function?

Summary Introduction

To review:

The description of blood–brain barrier with its functions.

Introduction:

The central nervous system consists of a brain and spinal cord. Three layers of cerebrospinal fluid and connective tissue (meninges) protect and surrounds the spinal cord and brain. The entry of dissolved substances from the blood to the cerebrospinal fluid is prevented by blood–brain barrier.

Explanation

The delivery of nutrients and oxygen to tissues is carried out by capillaries. The capillaries are lined by epithelial cells, which allow all the molecules to pass through except through the brain and spinal cord, where the capillaries are lined by endothelial cells, which allow selective transport of molecules across it.

The capillaries that carry blood to the brain and spinal cord are made up of endothelial cells having many tight junctions due to which selective transportation occurs.
