What is clonal selection?

Summary Introduction

To review:

Clonal selection.

Introduction:

The clonal selection is one of the most important processes of adaptive immunity found in vertebrates. This process was proposed by Niels Jerne, F. Macfarlane, and David Talmage in the year 1950.

Explanation

The interaction of antigen with antibody producing B-lymphocytes derive plasma cells and stimulates the proliferation of these cells with the same antigen specificity as the original parent cell. This process is known as clonal selection. It leads to a specific action, rapid response, and antibody diversity.

Engagement of B- cell receptor (antibody) with an antigen leads to a proliferation of that clone of cells. During proliferation, some B cells differentiate into plasma cells, while others differentiate into the memory cells. Plasma cells synthesize and secrete large number of antibodies that aids in the neutralization of antigen. Thus, the lymphocytes whose receptors are specific for a given epitope on an antigen will be clonally expanded...
