What is the role of the chemoreceptors in the medulla?

Summary Introduction

To review:

The role of chemoreceptors in the medulla.

Introduction:

A specialized sensory receptor that tends to transduce a chemical substance into a certain biological signal is referred to as the chemoreceptor. The signal is produced in the form of an action potential but when the chemosensor is a specialized sensory receptor like a taste bud or taste receptor, then the biological signal generated acts as a neurotransmitter and activates the nerves in its vicinity.

Explanation

The main function of chemoreceptors is to maintain the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood and body fluids. They are located centrally over the surface of medulla, and peripherally in the carotid bodies, which leads to the brain and aortic bodies further leading to the heart. The determination of pH (potential of hydrogen) is mostly done by the carbon dioxide concentration, and the changes in pH concentration is detected by the surface receptor medulla...
