The movie 10 Things I Hate About You is comparable to the book The Taming of the Shrew. William Shakespeare wrote The Taming of the Shrew with the focus of marriage in the 1500s. 10 Things I Hate About You is a romantic comedy that was made in the 1900s. In The Taming of the Shrew and 10 Things I Hate About You, Petruchio and Patrick are similar because they are manipulative and indifferent to other’s opinions of themselves; however, Patrick is more compassionate. To begin with, both Petruchio and Patrick are manipulative. For example, Petruchio agrees to marry Katerina because her father is rich (1.2.94-98). Since Petruchio is in need of money, he is willing to use Katerina to acquire it. In 10 Things I Hate About You, Patrick fakes his interest in a girl band and lies about smoking. He is deceiving Katharina to get her to show interest in him. If he can manipulate her into going on a date with him, Joey, a suitor of Bianca, will …show more content…
Specifically, Petruchio uses the technique of starving Kat in order to tame her (4.1.194-195). He uses a cruel strategy because he feels weakening her will make her obedient. Patrick pretends to be interested in reading a book Kat enjoys (10 Things). He wants to tame Kat by showing her they have similar interests while showing her his charming side. In summary, both try to tame Kat; however Patrick uses compassion to woo her while Petruchio uses a more aggressive strategy. Petruchio, from The Taming of the Shrew, and Patrick, from 10 Things I Hate About You, are both manipulative and indifferent towards others. However, Patrick uses compassion to woo Katharina, and Petruchio uses an aggressive strategy to woo Katerina. 10 Things I Hate About You and The Taming of the Shrew are about relationships during the 1500s and 1990s. They both have many similarities and difference and finish with a happy
Throughout both Ten Things I Hate about You and Taming Of The Shrew Patrick & Petruchio have the responsibility of wooing the shrew herself, Katherina. Although they both succeed, they do it in vastly different ways. When Petruchio is set with the task of wooing Katherina he tames her with abuse but Patrick tames her through more romantic means such as taking an interest in the music she likes and caring about her. They both however have mastered the art of manipulation but again they do it in different ways, Patrick takes a more romantic approach unlike Petruchio who tends to do it in a more violent way.
The movie 10 Things I Hate About You(1999) is a film that was based off of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew that was a popular play in the 16th
The Power of Love in 10 Things I Hate About You and Taming of the Shrew 'The Power of Love' is portrayed in various themes throughout both.
The story of The Taming of the Shrew is one that raises important issues both in the Shakespearean text and in the modern appropriation 10 Things I Hate About You.
In The Hate U Give, we are introduced to our protagonist Starr who is a 16 year old that is trying to figure out the struggles of high school. She lives in a ‘ghetto’ part of town and goes to private school in another town. She is trying to figure out the struggles of growing up and becoming her own person which include, dating a white man that she hides from her dad, feeling out of place, trying to be friends with the mean girl in school, and isn’t sure who she can trust.
In plays and movies love is very different and has changed over time. The relationships of Taming of the Shrew and 10 Things I Hate About You are drastically different due to the time period. In Taming of the Shrew Kat and Pertchio were just people that got married and Pertchio didn’t really love her that much. He just wanted to tame the untamable. Kat over time started to respect Pertchio and did what she was told.
One of the three emotions that Patrick felt can be found on page 64, and the text reads, “Then Andy, too, made him mad. Why couldn’t he just leave him alone?” The given quote represents the third feeling – how he was unable to understand what people did what they did. Another example to support that Patrick felt very emotional was when the author wrote, “Patrick grunted, and
A large part of both stories is to get Katherine in a relationship with Petruchio, or in 10 Things I Hate About You, Patrick. In neither telling
10 Things I Hate About You is arguably one of the most popular teen comedies of all time. Starring a talented set of actors, including Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the film succeeded both as a hilarious comedy and as a creative romance. One would never assume it was based on a work by Shakespeare, much less a work as sexist as The Taming of the Shrew is. The nature of Katherine and Petruchio’s relationship is based on Katherine’s submission, and can even be read as highly abusive. In a world where abusive relationships are a serious and prevalent issue, even among teenagers, carrying this out into the film would be quite polarizing. Not only would poking fun at the abuse push away a large part of the audience, but Katherine’s submission would cause her to be a very negative role model for young girls exposed to this film. 10 Things I Hate About You turns Shakespeare’s Katherine’s abuse and eventual submission to Petruchio into Kat’s willful decision to change from second wave feminism to third wave feminism. In doing this, the film modernizes the morally antiquated play for a modern audience, giving the audience an enjoyable movie and young girls a positive role model in Julia Stiles’ Kat Stratford.
The Taming of The Shrew is a comedy written by William Shakespeare possibly in the year of 1590. It is the second play that Shakespeare ever wrote. 10 Things I hate About You was filmed in 1999. The movie was directed by Gil Junger and was released on March 31, 1999. Although the film was later released and the name was changed it still has the same plot line that Shakespeare wrote. So the movie and play were basically the same except 10 Things I Hate About You is more modern than the original play.
Shakespeare’s play, The Taming of the Shrew, was written between the years 1590 and 1592. In 1967, Franco Zeffirelli directed the first movie adaption of the Shakespearean comedy. Three decades later, director Gil Junger assembled the second movie adaption of the play, the modernised version, called 10 Things I Hate About You. Today I will be speaking about how the Shakespearean play The Taming of the Shrew was successfully adapted into the modern day teen movie 10 Things I Hate About You, whilst still being able to preserve key themes and values throughout the film, reflecting modern cultural assumptions, beliefs and attitudes. This was evident during The Taming of the Shrew when traditional themes and values of: courtship, money, social order and status, patriarchal values and finally transformation were adapted into the film 10 Things I
I must admit I watched the movie, 10 Things I Hate About You, a lot when I was a teenager. I did not realize until recently that the movie is a modern version of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and the movie, 10 Things I Hate About You, are similar, yet very different. Love, relationships, and happily ever afters looked differently in the 1500’s and in the 1990’s.
Katherina is a woman living back in the 1500s, with no equality when it came to women vs man, and barely having a handful of choices when it came to her life, forwarding many centuries later there is Kat, a teenage girl who lives in modern day society, with choices, but no acceptance for herself. The Taming of the Shrew is a comedic play that reflects what the gender roles were like in the 1500s. While 10 Things I Hate About You is a spinoff of the aforesaid play but with a different take on what gender roles are because it is now uncommon in current times. In Katherina’s time period, it was normal for a woman to get married, stay and take care of the home and obey the husband while he went to work. However, in this century, gender roles have
The position of women in the late 20th century American film ‘Ten Thing I Hate About You’ depicts the certain expectations and roles women should uphold. Many aspects of women’s societal expectations have changed from the Elizabethan era, although some will still remain consistent even when society and its values unavoidably shift.
Directed by Gil Junger, the 1999 film is a retelling of Shakespeare’s well-known comedy, The Taming of the Shrew, presented in a contemporary American High School setting. ****************************************************************************************************************
