2017 has been full of great movies. This list would be longer if I really wanted to take a lot of time out of your day, so I will stick to the very best I've had the pleasure to see this year. I have no doubt that I will regret not putting one or two films on here, and I'm sure I will regret putting a film or two on this list. One film has an actor who did horrible stuff to people in real-life that makes me not want it on here, but it's just too damn good.
Here are Social Underground's best films of 2017:
Get Out
Get Out received universal acclaim from critics this year, and for good reason. It was about a black man dating a white woman, and then going to meet her family. A regular Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, right? Not at all. This

He took the dissociative identity disorder genre to another level. Preparing for the roll that James McAvoy took was like a marathon of 30 different characters. His main evil character was truly evil, but the sympathy and motivation of that character made the film even better.
Baby Driver
So, about Kevin Spacey. Watching this movie again is hard -- just as his others are now -- because he did some gross stuff to others. Him aside, the movie is brilliant. It's an achievement in writing, directing and editing. Some of the timing of the shots look like they should've took weeks to set up for only 1 minute of footage. Edgar Wright proves he a genius when it comes to clever filmmaking. He can take a boring line of dialogue in a film and turn it into visual comedy or action.
Wonder Woman
Probably the only film in the DCEU that people can agree was good. Wonder Woman is part of something bigger, but it can stand alone because of how it doesn't really need anything else to be associated with it. The chemistry between the characters, the directing of Patty Jenkins (who was snubbed at the Golden Globes), and the sheer fun of the movie makes it one of the year's best.
Wind River
Yet another home run by writer/director Taylor Sheridan. Wind River tells a simple murder mystery, but exceeds because of the exposition of the characters involved. That's what he does best. He can give you a run-of-the-mill tales that has been done 100 times, then expand on everything to the point
Antwone Fisher in my opinion is probably the most impactful movie I have ever seen. People may say, “ What a good movie” but I say “what a good man”.
The main character Louis Bloom drives home when he encounters an accident. He watches as two men film the accident yet are not helping.Nevertheless, Louis becomes intensely focused and submerged into his field of career after he sells his first film of a graphically gory shot of a victim who got shot
One thing that makes Wonder Woman a great movie is that the movie demonstrates the best of human values. Quite a bit of movies that are supremely popular are the ones that have loads of human values and emotions, moreover it looks like Wonder Woman has that in spades. Justin Change, film critic for Los Angeles Time, has this to say about Wonder Woman: “With forthright emotion, spirited humor, a surprisingly purposeful sense of spectacle but a sincere commitment to their protagonist’s humanitarian ideals, director Patty
This is a good thriller because it is effectively suspenseful and exciting. It is a great film because it is fun, it’s enjoyable. Rear Window is fun to watch because it combines
Comedy Elements: What this film did well for me was balancing the various cinematic elements. The filmmaker's allowed the comedic character's to be the comic relief. Everyone doesn't need to be quipping all the time to make funny moments. Which has been a part of Marvel's formula for awhile. It was nice to see the comedic moments play out slightly different than the normal Marvel wheel-house of comedy.
In my opinion, "Ant Man." Despite the main character being a little known hero to the majority of the public, the actor brought the character to life, and had most people theater laughing out loud the whole movie, which is fairly uncommon. It got away from the seriousness of the main Avengers series, yet remained in the complex world that has been woven since the original movie. Also, while the main plot was not something entirely new, it was fresh enough to keep you on the edge of your seat as Ant Man was chased dramatically by a toy
My favorite, blockbuster film that hit theaters this summer was Ant-Man. For me, it's the right amount of action packed fighting scenes and whimsy, light-hearted humor dialog that really sold me. Honestly, I am just biased and love any Marvel movie that comes out. It might be because I love watching it with my family and they seem to always enjoy it as well. However, throughout the movie you see themes of abandonment, mentorship, and fatherhood and lessons that really impact you.
Luckily, even movies that make me cry from how awful they are have their silver linings. McAvoy was a shining light in the dark pit that this movie fell in. His ability to portray many different characters within one movie is admirable and entertaining, and not only was he going off camera as one person and on as another, he was capable of shifting personalities on screen. He captured the ability to physically show the mental morphing between personalities while remaining an absolutely phenomenal actor.
A film that I love that does not fit this bill is Space Jam. This movie is not pretty, it is not well-written, and it definitely is not well-acted. Michael Jordan may be an incredible basketball player, but whoever thought he was good enough for an entire movie was
It is no secret that DC’s attempt at a cinematic universe has left many fans disappointed, but a lot of DC comic book fans could all agree on is ‘Wonder Woman’ delivers. ‘Wonder Woman’ arrived with a lot of pressure weighing on it with a lot of potential turn around point for the Dc Extended Universe (DCEU). Wonder Woman is thankfully a much more traditional super hero origin tale with heart, humor, color, and a lot of kick ass action. Director Patty Jenkins fills ‘Wonder Woman’ with a lot of bright vibrate color tones and establishes herself as a very capable and smart action director, with sequences that will prove why ‘Wonder Woman’ is a superhero who truly belongs in the DC trinity, along-side Batman and Superman. The film leans heavily
Out of the few films that I have seen this year, the last feature film that I saw was Dunkirk near its release in late July of this year.
Wonder Woman is a really good movie. Imperfect and derailed by an optimism-busting final 20-30 minutes, Patty Jenkins has mostly delivered a powerhouse of a summer blockbuster, one long, long overdue and a movie that almost atones for DC's miserable start to their DCEU (DC Extended Universe), which includes the disappointing Man of Steel and the borderline abominations that are Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.
The movie tells a great story, and the work the actors put into their roles is even more impressive after watching the documentary on Sean Penn?s Becoming Sam and watching the professional actors working with mentally disabled people in the film.
In May 22 2002 fans are shocked by the first Marvel film The Amazing Spider-Man which was given a five star rating i host as the best movie of the year. After that more and more highly rated movie has came out every year like Captain America : Civil War, Guardians Of The Galaxy, and Deadpool.
Releasing a movie alongside the likes of Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad doesn’t make it hard for a movie to show audience a good film. However, Wonder Woman was able to not only achieve this effortless victory, but also bring a distinction to franchise that desperately needed saving. Not only was this origin story able to stand alone but it was also able to weave itself into the distinct top origin movies of all time. The shining point of this film is the exceptional characters who are gracefully written and exquisitely performed.
