2001: A Space Odyssey

As a child, Pokémon was the game that every kid would play. There was something special about the little pocket monsters that appealed to every audience. However, it brought to life much controversy about the theory of evolution. In actuality, 2001: A Space Odyssey has a very similar style of evolution to the beloved video game, and Arthur C. Clarke makes use of the evolutionary theory in the novel. In Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, the advancement of technology that the monoliths give humans is directly correlated with the evolutionary process of our species and is the only possible method to stop the evolutionary decline. A stone tablet comes down and teaches the man-apes how to use tools, and saves them from extinction. This use of tools sets up the main theme of the novel- the advancement of tools in relationship to the evolution of humans. The novel continues and there is a fast forward to the future, where man has progressed to the moon. There is the discovery of a new monolith, and humans learn that it is transmitting data to a moon on Saturn. Next there is a fast forward to on the spaceship Discovery One where five people, two awake and three in hibernation, and an artificial intelligence robot, HAL, are on a path to the moon on Saturn. Frank Poole and Dave Bowman are two astronauts who are described as generalists. HAL sees the humans as a limitation to the ability for him to complete the mission, so he kills Poole, but Bowman survives and manages to disconnect HAL. After travelling alone for years, he reaches the moon on Saturn, but enters a massive Monolith called the “Star-Gate.” He is transfered to a white room where there is plenty of food and water, and he spends the rest of his life in this room, eventually evolving into humans next “form,” a Star-Child. He then returns to earth and stops a nuclear war from starting- a reference to the Cold War. This is where the novel ends and the sequel …show more content…

The nuclear bomb and space exploration were two technological advancements that were happening during this time that truly impacted the world. Russia and America, the two world superpowers at this time were in high tensions with each other, each seeking to assert dominance over the other. This period, the Cold War, “worked its way into the fabric of everyday life… fueled by the arms race and growing threat of nuclear weapons” (The Space Race). Besides the obvious fear of nuclear arms, there was also a second major cause for this Cold war- space exploration. Space was another dramatic arena for the Cold War competition (The Space Race).
