On February 09, 2001 detectives were conducting a trafficking investigation at 1400 Peachtree Dr. During this investigation, informant confirmed that the suspects are smuggling children into the U.S for prostitution purposes. Upon further investigation, informant also stated that there was information held in a computer that will confirm his findings and locations to 25 other victims.
On the basis of the recovery of the computer, the detectives obtained a search warrant for this address. The items to be searched for included, children and laptops. The offenses involved included, human trafficking, kidnap, smuggling, and sexual misconduct with underage minors. On February 09, 2001, members of the police department’s special weapons and
Based on tips from witnesses, officers located the suspect, Derrick Bernard Cunningham, hiding in a nearby field with his 12-year-old daughter. Cunningham was taken into custody without incident. A search warrant was executed on Cunningham’s residence, which is in the same complex as the incident. During the search, officers recovered weapons, clothing, and items
As mentioned above, one very prominent private factor that relates closely to child sex trafficking is the trauma that a child may have after they are back in a safe environment. What needs to be looked at is how a private trouble, such as trauma, relates to a broader public issue of victim resources that are available for children.
“I want my mommy” is a common phrase used by kids who are in emotional distress and want to find comfort. To hear a child utter those words would be enough to evoke empathy in most Americans. Unfortunately, while most Americans look at a child as helpless, emotional, and pure, there is a darker side to the U.S population. This demographic actively chooses to disregard a child's innocence and uses them for their own personal needs: sex trafficking. Sex trafficking is the exploitation of nonconsensual people that occurs throughout the United States and Globally. Oftentimes the victims are subjected to threats, violence, and other forms of coercion to compel their victims to perform commercial sex acts. The reason this is a problem is that sex
There are many things that can be included in a search warrant in the case of a sex trafficking case, they may include, but are not limited to condoms, lubricants, personal documents, telephone bills, bank records, photographs, credit card receipts, and condom wrappers (Swanson et at., pg. 354, 2012). The search warrant may include condoms for the reason that they can help determine those that were involved in the sexual assault of those that are victim to sex trafficking. The condom wrappers are used as an additional step to connect someone’s fingerprints on the wrapper to the DNA found in a condom at the crime scene.
In one study of confirmed and suspected victims of domestic minor sex trafficking, 80% reported seeing a medical provider within the year prior to their identification as victims. Most presented to emergency departments (63%), but a significant proportion (35%) presented to a variety of outpatient clinic settings. Their health needs span both physical and behavioral health domains. CST is associated with sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV/AIDS, pregnancy, injuries from physical and sexual assault, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression with suicidality, and other behavior problems. Adolescent girls in one study had a 47% prevalence of STIs at the time of evaluation and a 32% rate of prior pregnancies. Forty-seven percent
In the article, “Human Trafficking | The Freedom Project”, the organization The Freedom Project informs the reader in what way people become victims of human trafficking. The article goes into more depth, breaking down on why escaping is so arduous because most victims are trafficked into other countries and do not know the language to ask for help, have their money and identification stolen. This article is helpful to my research because it states how someone can be driven to be trafficked. For instance, according to the article, “poverty is a major driver of the human trafficking industry” (“Human Trafficking | The Freedom Project”). I will use this information to elucidate on the causes of human trafficking. The information contained in
Victims of human trafficking continue to face health consequences years after their release. Potentially one of the most devastating forms of human trafficking, sex trafficking and its associated sexual abuse is responsible for the majority of long term health conditions that arise from trafficking (Muftic & Finn, 2013). According to Muftic and Finn (2013), women who enter into sex work via human trafficking, are at even greater odds of suffering from severe health conditions “…than women who enter into sex work by other means” (p. 1866). Other factors such as length of time in captivity, location of captivity, and age, also affect the long term severity of medical conditions (Oram et al., 2012). Trafficking victims who are exploited within
A great amount of children are sold and inducted by familiar faces of the neighborhood, family members and/or guardians, and friends of the family. According to the Ark of Hope for Children Child Trafficking Statistics, “Traffickers maybe neighbors, friends, returnees, and agricultural operators, owner of a business, diplomats, and even families (2014).” Statistics show that families can’t care for children and sell them because of “unemployment issues, unhappy home situations: abuse, debt, addicts in the family, and large sums of money” (AOHFC 2014). The family members who do sell their children are not aware of the physical and mental abuse that their child may go through while other guardians may not care because of the money intake.
The International Law states, human trafficking has been going for over 100 years, and “through history international in America, Asia, South America, Africa and etc… by trafficking and forcing an ongoing prostitution then, later abuse of native populations by other European colonizers… through the African slave trade too; also transporting females in marketing for prostitution, labor, drug advantages, or other illegal influences that people were willing to do or were forced. Human trafficking is based through gender, ethnic, against people’s rights, illegal actions, by enforcing themselves to sell themselves, through labor work, selling drugs, “transnational crime, involving with money laundering, drug and weapon trade, and human organs” including exploiting people to prostitute themselves.
them during a domestic dispute, bars, normal traffic stops, and especially strip clubs. With emergency personal and first responders and healthcare professionals, these signs and symptoms could be seen more often than not in terms of the victim being treated at local hospitals or being seen by at a local doctor’s office. But in some occasions, emergency personnel may not be the only ones to encounter victims of human trafficking. It some cases the health and safety inspectors my come across victims as they work in restaurants, construction sites, factories, as well as farms (Santoro, 2013).
Hello I am a 9th grade student at Carolina High School in Greenville Sc studying human trafficking. We just read a book about human trafficking called “Sold.” We’ve made posters up around the school so some kids will hopefully want to take action in human trafficking. We also did the red sand project where we put red sand in the cracks of streets, sidewalks, and parking lots. After reading articles about human trafficking and reading the book I learned that human trafficking happens to most girls at a very young age. Some of these girls are drugged just to have sex with their “customers” and if they refuse they’re beaten. These girls are told that they have to pay off their debt in order to leave but they don’t know that the money they make is going to person's incharge. Some people are even sometimes born into human trafficking.
Many american people have little understanding on how children are recruited into human trafficking. By the american people knowing the ways, they recruit young children we can possible try to put a ending to human trafficking. “Deceptive ads for work abroad in local newspapers, and employment and travel agencies mislead people to believe that they will be migrating for legitimate jobs. Children can also be sold into trafficking by family members who have been promised high profit remittances.” By stopping these terrible ads, and family members from giving up each other all for money, maybe one day we will end human trafficking on young
arrenged three world congresses against sexual explotation of children and Adolescents. The first one took place in Sweden in 1996, the second one was in Japan in 2001 and the third one was in Brazil in 2008. ECPAT took a leading role in these congresses with the aid of many International organizations such as WHO, ILO, UNICEF and many NGO groups that are willing to help to end worldwide child prostitution. ( Ecpatinternational.org, 2015 ). These acts was very helpful to end child prostitution, but it is also needed to conduct campaigns in social media because it is fact that a global response from millions can be incentive to accomplish a goal. One of the most successful social media campaign in recent years was ice bucket challenge that helped
Combating child labor trafficking globally has been one of the main socio political conflicts that needs to be terminated, due to the exploitation of children in the workplace and the hazardous conditions through which they are exposed. The estimated number of discrepancies have increased over a period of time, depicting the numerous amounts of young children induced into forced labor in the following areas: brothels, agriculture, and sweat shops to contribute to the financial needs of their families. Various studies have been conducted, to socially aware the public of the millions of children that are affected within the economic struggles of their natal country. The trafficking of children is interconnected with influential labor sectors that violates the human rights of children and create high demands for cheap labor for their performed functions. Many international labor organizations take part in several political initiatives combat distinct types of illegal child labor which inform entire communities of the risks and unjust treatment of children in the work area. The elimination of child labor needs to be treated as a primary issue that governmental institutions need to fight to protect children at all costs; and prevent the progression of criminal organizations and their illicit acts, and be prosecuted accordingly to the law stipulations. The illogical matter of child trafficking is that it does not only exist in third world countries but also in a progressive nation
Today's society has made connecting to potential victims easier. Most girls are recruited through social media for sex trafficking. The internet is making girls more vulnerable to others around the world without being aware of it. This is why the agency Thai Internet Crimes Against Children was formed. TICIAC responds to children trafficking through internet connections. Since this problem has formed, Thailand's government has enacted legislation that criminalizes the production and distribution of porngraphy. Children sex trafficking has expanded to a form of pornography for another way of distribution to potential buyers. Making it easier to make money.
