Big Bang Theory - The Premise
The Big Bang theory is an effort to explain what happened at the very beginning of our universe. Discoveries in astronomy and physics have shown beyond a reasonable doubt that our universe did in fact have a beginning. Prior to that moment there was nothing; during and after that moment there was something: our universe. The big bang theory is an effort to explain what happened during and after that moment.
According to the standard theory, our universe sprang into existence as "singularity" around 13.7 billion years ago. What is a "singularity" and where does it come from? In 1965, Radioastronomers Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson discovered a 2.725 degree Kelvin (-454.765 degree Fahrenheit, -270.425 degree Celsius) Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB) which pervades the observable universe. This is thought to be the remnant which scientists were looking for. Penzias and Wilson shared in the 1978 Nobel Prize for Physics for their discovery. * Finally, the abundance of the "light elements" Hydrogen and Helium found in the observable universe are thought to support the Big Bang model of origins.
Big Bang Theory - The Only Plausible Theory?
Is the standard Big Bang theory the only model consistent with these evidences? No, it's just the most popular one. Internationally renown Astrophysicist George F. R. Ellis explains: "People need to be aware that there is a range of models that could explain the observations….For instance, I can construct you a spherically symmetrical universe with Earth at its center, and you cannot disprove it based on observations….You can only exclude it on philosophical grounds. In my view there is absolutely nothing wrong in that. What I want to bring into the open is the fact that we are using philosophical criteria in choosing our models. A lot of cosmology tries to hide that."4

Cosmic background radiation is radiation from the early development of the universe. After the big bang the universe was smaller and much hotter than it is now and was filled with a fog of hydrogen plasma. Eventually the universe started expanding and became cooler. As it cooled stable atoms started forming, leaving only CMB remained so it is a strong evidence that the Big Bang Theory was correct. Scientist thought if the big bang actually happened then there would have to be cosmic background radiation left over, so all they had to do is find evidence of this and they did so this gave the big bang theory evidence to support their claim.
Everything makes sense, but how to prove such a beginning? In the 1960s, scientists realized that such a hot and violent beginning must have left a vast wave of heat that can still be traced in small amounts. Not long after this realization, two Bell scientists announced that they had discovered this heat wave, called the cosmic background radiation. They both received the Nobel Prize in 1978 for their findings. These first findings, however, had a few hitches. The cosmic background radiation was found to be fairly smooth and even. It was hard for scientists to figure out how stars and galaxies grouped together with such an even distribution. Once again, with the advance of technology and the challenge of a good problem, scientists went to work. The COBE and WMAP probes were satellites launched by NASA to map the background microwave radiation and measure temperature differences across the sky. These two satellites in particular confirm that CMBR is in fact true.
In almost every religion in the world, there is a creation story; the start of the universe.
