“My inventions are down in the basement. They’re a bunch of useless Rube Goldberg things, so don’t get too excited.” April and May had arrived at Nick’s house, April looking around every corner, anxious to see if Grandma B was there. She couldn’t take it any longer. “So, what’s your family like, Nick?” “Well, I have an older sister, Barbara. She’s at the diner on the corner of Anderson Street with her boyfriend, Robert.” April’s grandfather. “My mum is out on errands and my dad’s at work at the factory. And yours?’ “Oh um… it’s complicated,” April responded awkwardly. “I’ll say,” May told April under her breath. “Ah, I understand. The walls were cream colored, and the furniture white. She had record player and a small, organized desk on the wall opposite the lilac bed. There was a bookcase and a nightstand on either side of the bed. Pink lace curtains were kept open at the window and a small pile of cardboard boxes were stacked up in the corner. “Oh no, your room is beautiful,” May said. April felt so uncomfortable, and May looked at her wearily. On the outside, they both kept up appearances to seem like nothing was wrong, but they were both worried about what it would do to their reality. Young Grandma B continued to talk, not noticing the stiffness in the air, and put a Barbra Streisand record on. “Ah, it’s been a year since this record was released and I still love it,” she added, “I think it’s because we share a name. I feel a connection to her, you know?” She hummed a bit to “Happy Days are Here Again” and asked if the girls liked Barbra as well.
