A Brief Overview of World War I

The First World War began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary, killed by a Serbian group. The assassination prompted Austria-Hungary to declare war against Serbia. Russia supported Serbia; Austria-Hungary had assistance from Germany; and France and Great Britain had allied with Russia. Then, the declaration of war began. France, Great Britain, and Germany fought on the Western Front while Russia battled Germans on the Eastern Front.

World War 1 was allegedly started by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. This war led to majority of conflicts from July 28, 1914 to November 11,1918. Which was fought against the centrals powers and the allies.World War 1 had source of, Militarism, Allies, and Nationalism.

There were three alliance groups in Europe in 1914, which were The Triple Alliance, The Triple Entente, and the Neutral Nations. The Triple alliance was made up of Germany,Australia, and Italy. The Triple Entente was the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and Africa. The Neutral Nations were Portugal, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Sweden. Romania, Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire (DBQ Project Doc 3).

As depicted in the map in Document 2, the Triple Alliance consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy, while the Triple Entente was made up of Great Britain, France and Russia. This source can be trusted due the fact that it is a map exhibiting proven facts. Similar to how building up one’s military made countries more likely to fight, forming alliances did the same. They felt more comfortable entering battle when they knew they had another army backing them up. This boosted confidence made the concept of war seem like a much smaller issue, causing more brash responses to the issues at hand.

Good morning/afternoon class. Today I will be talking to you about the Battle of Verdun. The Battle of Verdun was the longest battle during WW1 fought from 21 February to 18 December 1916, fought on the Western Front. The Western Front was one of the main battle grounds in WW1 located in France. The battle was fought between the German and French armies and caused over 700,00 casualties.

This war was unique with the weapons, it was more devastating. The time period was from July 28, 1914 to November 1918. WW1 started with the assassination of Archduke Franz. The allies were Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and the United States, against Germany, Austria- Hungry, and Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria. The United States did not enter the war until the third year.

On july 28,1914 world war 1 began.what had started this big war was the assassination of the archduke. For many people this war was known as the first war or the war to end all wars. World war 1 was when Great Britain, France, Russia, Belgium, Italy, Japan, the United States, and other allies defeated Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, and Bulgaria. Between 1914 and 1918 15 million soldiers were killed and 20 million were wounded. The conditions were very crucial for the soldiers at war and their families at home.

The war all started because new Germany wanted to become a global power, but Britain was ahead already, and there couldn’t be two global powers at once. Both Germany and Britain saw war as an opportunity; to countries, war could have been a positive thing.
