A Career As A Healthcare Administrator

I was nine years old when my family made the stannous decision to come to America; with only a few clothes and barely any money, the pursuit of the American dream seemed more like a fantasy than anything else. Ever since I was young, I was drawn to the medical field. Looking back, it all appears as a nightmare now: a cold room, no electricity, and my parents imploring for the nurses help. Yet this nightmare was my firsthand experience at the detrimental effects of a limited healthcare. Growing up in a poor town of Albania, I faced minor health concerns, but it wasn’t until I got sick with a common cold that my life almost ended. The unsanitary hospital condition and the lack of medications were part of the sad reality I could not escape from. Thus today, it is my goal to make a significant contribution to the health of the future generations. My passion for the medical field combined with my determination on building and perpetuating an outstanding healthcare service, has lead me to pursue a master’s degree in Health Administration

The profession I am pursuing in the Kaplan University is Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration. With this profession I can definitely have a different option on where to work either in a hospital, long term care, doctor office, and hospice agency. This type of career long term care administrator is a very well paid job, but that comes with a lot of responsibilities a lot of long hours. One of many responsibility is budget planning, personal, board meeting, and employee overview. As an administrator you also need to be in compliance with local, state, and federal laws making sure guidelines are being followed.

The field of healthcare administration is a vastly diverse field. The ranges in roles vary from medical receptionist, coordinators, and clinical professionals to administrators. Even with in the administrator role there is a range of specialty positions, however there are some base line qualifications which individuals must have before they may be able to move into a specialty administrator role. The minimum qualifications for a healthcare/hospital administrators are 5-7 years of similar executive-level management experience in an academic health setting, preferably in a department of similar size and scope; must have extensive experience in medical center finances, budget preparation and control, personnel management and information systems;

Are there any medical assistant organizations that medical assistants can join? Since the medical field is growing there are plenty of opportunities for medical assistants to join an organization. Medical assistant organizations vary thought the world; in the paper I will be introducing you to organizations within the U.S, Texas, and Houston area. Here in the Texas area we are known for having the Houston Medical center with that center comes organizations and jobs for Medical assistants.

As a recent graduate from the Health Care Administration and Planning (HCAP) program at Tennessee State University my desire for Health Care Administration has grown tremendously. My passion has always been Long Term Care, from observing family members being admitted into a facility with high abuse rates, sitting with the elderly at a young age, to completing an internship at National Healthcare Corporation (NHC) during the summer of 2016 under the Regional Director, Mr. Tim Shelly. I have always had a love for the aging population and wanted to work in an environment that believed in producing the best quality of care for the aging population.

A health care administrator is responsible for establishing health care standards, making strategic policy decisions and implementing the personnel management procedures necessary to support his/her vision. In addition to the internal leadership they provide, health care administrators are leaders within the greater community as well. They partner with other health care organizations, comply with government regulations, advocate and testify on behalf of health care

Using the SMART method, my long term goal is to continue my work as a CNA while applying for healthcare administrator positions. I would like to work as an administrator for at least 3 years for any medical setting. While working, I will be looking into ways on how I can own and operate a home healthcare agency. According to Marak, (2017), I really don’t need to have experience in the medical industry; I would just need to have the passion for providing care, the marketing savvy, an understanding of business knowledge, and integrity. With my CNA experience, along with my other work experiences, I am half way there.

With technology always changing and improving, these professionals constantly have to take classes, learning how to work with these databases. For example, a CNA, Melissa Rodrigues, was required to take three weekend classes to learn how to use a new EHR database effectively. Also, to keep their certification, physician assistants must complete 100 hours of continuing education every 2 years. Another requirement that just began in 2014 is that a recertification exam is required every ten years to keep a PA license. Many jobs require relocation, but as a PA, it isn’t common. Usually a person can find a job in this field almost anywhere there are hospitals, doctor’s offices, or people in need of medical attention.

After high school I plan to attend college and major in biology or environmental science. I’m undecided on whether I want to go on to become a doctor or a physician assistant. However, I intend to use my career as either a doctor or a physician assistant to serve underdeveloped areas both nationally and internationally. I’d also like to get involved with organizations that involve promoting health and education.

A medical assistant can be considered to be a “jack of all trades” in the medical field (Xu, 2013). This profession is expected to grow 31% by 2020 (Xu, 2013). After learning about all the job duties of a medical assistant it is clear to see the importance in becoming certified. Some important reasons in becoming a nationally credentialed medical assistant is, having more job responsibilities and being able to provide more services to the patients, becoming certified also lets the future employer know the seriousness a person has in field of medical assistant, better pay rate, most importantly an employer will look at the credentials and consider that person to be less of a legal liability (Balasa, 2009).

When a patient is admitted into a hospital, it is vital for him to trust his caretaker and to feel comfortable. The one person that can help the patient in this way is a physician assistant. For a physician assistant to become successful, he or she must display the intellectual qualities of a physician and the nurturing qualities of a nurse. A physician assistant requires a wide skills range, proper education, potential employment options, and the personal qualities to become successful.

According to the dictionary, a Physician assistant is “A person trained and licensed to provide basic medical services, usually under the supervision of a physician”. Even though Physicians Assistants don’t have a big role in the medical field like doctors or Physicians, they help millions of people with their medical issues. The career of a Physician Assistant has a lot of job duties that they need to accomplish every day, but they vary depending on the area of expertise they choose. Some of the main duties of a PAs are to examine patients, interpret the diagnostic test, and to educate and counsel their patients.

Before becoming a medical office manager they would need to have developed some work history. Some may develop these skills from clinical or administrative background for example, medical assistant, nurse or even a receptionist. Many may have a history of billing and coding skills as well. One must be able to provide communication skills and organization skills. There are some who have been in a manger position before. Those who do not have a much healthcare background but they obtain a bachelor’s or master’s degree in health administration or medical office management.

My goal is to have a career in health care management. While researching careers, I discovered health care management. I choose health care management as my career option for two reasons. I’m looking for a career where I can do what I passionate about and impact lives. These are important factor in my career choice. Health care management met my two requirements and at that point I knew this was the career for me. I firmly believe that any career I pursue should be one that I’m passionate about. One of my passions is helping others. Health care managers help patients just as much as doctors, nurses and other clinical professionals. For me it’s very imperative that I find a career were I would have impact the lives of others. This would ensure that I’m fulfilling one of my purposes in life.
