Totalitarian Regimes, Unit 3 A Comparative Analysis of Church and State Relations in Mussolini's Italy and in Hitler’s Germany. Richard Rothwell This report will explore the relationship between Church and State in both Mussolini's Italy and Hitler's Germany. The position of the church prior to change of government will first be taken into account, providing both a better understanding of the events that followed, the societies in question and their perception of church and government. Hitler's father was a civil servant. Rigid and organised, he exerted a great deal of control over Hitler until the time he died. Hitler, although not a great student, when he was very young, had been taught respect for religious authority. He attended regularly at church school, and at some point was eager, having had early aspirations of joining the clergy. In contrast to this, Mussolini was contemptuous of his clergy teachers, he was always getting into trouble and as a school boy he was violent and aggressive. When he was eleven, as a self styled gang leader, he was expelled from school for stabbing another student. This none-conformity could of been symptomatic of the domineering figure of Mussolini's father. While Hitler’s father was strict and authoritative, his mother’s voice was always held in regard, and she would stand up to Alois when he punished Adolf. Hitler was thus very close to his mother as a young boy, and as a result more attentive to Catholicism. Mussolini didn’t have that kind of maternal influence. His father was a man of little restraint, a womaniser and a drunk, he imposed his authority on the family, and it was from him that Mussolini undoubtedly got his rebellious streak, and disregard for the church.
