I am a feminist because I believe that males and females are equal and should have the same rights. Males and females have the same capacities of doing everything the opposite gender does. Man and woman are both humans that their gender is the only barrier to their differences. Women have been used for multiple things during the years but never really valued for what they do and all the work that they do that is not appreciated. Rights should be equal no matter what you have under your underwear or what sexual preferences you have. Humans are humans and they should be equal.
In Lorber article she talks about how gender roles are socially constructed “gender is constantly created and recreated out of human interactions, out of social life, and the texture and order of the social life”(Lober,65 ) and how gender is something that we see everywhere and anywhere that we already have an idea on how males and females have to act. Every time I went to visit my family they would ask me if I knew how to cook and take care of babies the way I was ready to get married. In spring break I went to visit some family and when I was there they question me why my daughter had a boys car seat and how she was not wearing girl color clothes.
I got married and pregnant at the age of 18. Many of the older people I invited to my wedding asked me if I was prepared to serve my husband as a wife. Like in Johnson’s article it talks about the system that society have people are expected to be a
In many shops, there seems to be an obvious separation between boys and girls items, for example, the birthday cards, books, clothes, and toys. This is shown in a variety of ways the boy's items are mainly the color blue and the books have pictures of either action figures, superheroes or tools. Whereas the girl's items are mainly the color pink. The books show pictures of fairies, princess, and Bratz. The cards also have the theme of the color pink for girls and blue for boys. The girl's cards have a lot of sparkles and pretty pictures whereas the boy's cards are covered in camo kind of illustrations and also have action figures on the covers. The children's clothes are separated into sections where there are labels for the boy's clothes and labels for the girl's clothes. The girl's clothing is all pretty and pink, it is covered in sparkles. Whereas boys clothing has camo patterns, blue colors, and pictures of action figures.
Gender Roles can be defined as roles society expects people to play on account of their sex life. Like all roles, gender roles are made up of sets of expectations, so they can be thought of as sets of expirations, so they can be thought of as sets of expectation that are attached to sex.(pp: 220 John E. Farley & Michael W. Flota).
I consider myself a feminist solely on the premise of the word’s definition. Webster defines feminist as “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities; the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.” Our country was founded on similar beliefs but the gender equality segment was forgotten. Women did not have the right to vote or even work until the 1920’s. Even today, women struggle to be considered equals in all aspects of American life. America is still widely seen as a largely patriarchal society even when there are statistically more women employed and single-handedly maintaining a household than ever before.
To understand gender differences within language and society, we must first realize how our genders were divided. The division between the sexes began with the agricultural revolution that transformed human civilization that is believed to have taken place between 8000 and 7000 B.C.E. The consequences of agriculture and the ability to harvest and store food, eliminating the need to hunt and gather, were life changing. Settlements began to develop and gender roles were forming. Men would tend to the fields and the herds while women had a tendency to remain close to the homes, becoming the caretakers of the children and households. As civilization developed, the work done by the men away from the home grew to be regarded as more important than the work done by the women. Due to this newly found perception, “men came to play the more dominant role in human society, which gave rise to the patriarchy” (Spielvogel 4-5). This mindset has been fortified in human culture and has defined gender roles in societies throughout the centuries.
Throughout the course many, women that we have encountered were perceived as the stereotypical gender appropriateness. For example, women were expected to cook, clean, and take care of their children or siblings if the girl was not married yet. Nevertheless there were women, who worked as well as following the appropriate gender roles such as Vienna from Johnny Guitar, Josephine from Ballad of Little Jo, and Alexandra from O’ Pioneers. However the women all had a role in society and that was to do housework, took on a man’s role, and became the women they wanted to be.
Personally, myself I wouldn’t consider myself a feminist. Understanding that men do have higher roles in the workplace, but women are striving to get on the same level. Women do have the voting rights that already have been abolished, but it seems like women who are feminist are asking for more than the usual women. Some rights that are given to men is fit for them not for us we should just stay in our place. As we know there are some disguising human-beings on this earth, every relationship is different and is not perfect. I am a heterosexual female always will be.
Many people don’t know the difference between gender and sex. Sex is anatomical and biological. Gender role can be defined as a person’s inner sense of how a male or female should feel and behave. Culture and society are two important factors in relation to this particular topic. This implies that various societies and cultures may produce children and later fully grown men and women who may have diverse perspectives of a man or a woman’s place or role in the world around them; this is often determined by their culture’s gender stereotypes. Gender roles are the products of interactions between individuals and their environments, and they give certain cues about the behavior that is acceptable based upon their sex. Members of the society must learn the appropriate way for them to behave and what is actually expected of them as well as others. These roles are also based on norms or standards created by society.
The 1890’s were a time of change for women as they began to explore new roles. At the forefront of change were two adventurous women who led. Nelly Bly and Elizabeth Bisland stepped in and began to change the expectations of women and their roles as they set sail to their race around the world. This race would be a step in the right direction towards women's rights and their ability to work and do “ manly things too”. Feminism was a huge deal in the late 1800’s. And these two women were some of the first to put a stop to that.
The proper gender roles during that time produce restriction on accomplishing goals out of the norm by society. The Chloe culture in the book viewed woman as overseer of the home and family. This could be overwhelming or boring causing them to seek other avenues for pleasure. When that direction was followed it was not acceptable in their society, therefore, provoking them to feel that the only way to be happy is in death. Although the gender role was hash over time, it began to change giving women the desired freedom. After all, our gender roles in our today society also have altered over the years with the advancement of the profession women are now viewed by their skill that qualifies them for top jobs. In the past women roles and attitudes
Gender roles in any society dictates specific standards by which each individual (based on gender) is expected to act. Proper decorum based on sex, is manifested in the way men and women verbally express themselves, reason, act, and participate with each other. These differences in social expectations have impacted the way in which humanity perceives family responsibilities, job allocation, entertainment and even tangible products based on masculinity or femininity. Yet, based on the scientific principals set by Charles Darwin, evolution is inevitable. Gender roles in today’s culture seem to be obsolete. Socioeconomic factors have forced the hand of evolution, tarnishing the guiding lines of gender roles and responsibility. Society should evolve and stop trying to push the so-called typical gender roles because it can hinder the growth and development of today’s and the future’s society.
In conclusion, I am a feminist because I am a man. My word will be valued more, but brings sight to gender inequality. Being a feminist, is to progress inequality within homes and community and not entitle gender to compare which is more superior, but rather the
Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women, while sex refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women (World Health Organization). It means gender is overall role, their attitude and activities which is affected by society and cultures and it is regulated people have a different roles between men and women. For example, in the past, people believe that men are strong and responsible for their family by working outside to make a comfortable living with them, whereas women tend to be obedient to their husband and scarify themselves by doing housework. For this reason that women could not have many chances
From adolescence and on, people have dreams. They develop a sense of longing for a certain career or hobby, and push to make this dream come true. Boys wanted to be firemen, and girls wanted to be ballerinas. One dangerous and heroic, while the other is graceful and poised. Have you ever heard of these roles switched? Have you heard a little boy say he wants to become a famous ballerina, or a young girl saying she wants to put out fires? The society we live in today has taught and developed many from a young age to believe in stereotypes and specific gender roles; therefore, leading us to be blinded by the fact that any sex can do anything they put their mind to: specifically women. Women who have been told they “can’t” for their whole lives.
It was touching to read about your mother’s unconditional love and support she showed your family, even when it meant doing more of the work than your dad did, and despite the fact that it meant she would have to violate her own gender roles. This reminds me, in many ways, of my mom because she was a single mother and was forced to fulfill both gender roles that involved parenting me and my younger sister as my father left when we were just babies. While it may have became more acceptable for women to work full time jobs, like your mother did, I think western society still has a long ways to go before it achieves complete gender equality. This is because the idea of women’s roles continues to be demeaned and belittled by men and by
When I was young I was told I should not like the color blue because it was a “boy” color and that I should prefer pink instead. I was told I should not like pokemon because only boys should play it. Growing up I was always given dolls to play with while my brother received legos. It is scientifically proven that giving dolls to children allow them to have more nurturing skills and giving legos allows to kids develop problem-solving skills. However, parents are more reluctant to give dolls to boys even though it can benefit them greatly. Young boys and girls are separated so much that they aren't even allowed to play with the same toys or like the same colors. What children experience in their childhood subconsciously
