Earlier in the Fall semester on the evening of October 20th, our First-Year Experience class met with members of Classics 390 and members of the Classics Club in Randolph Hall to watch the hour-and-a-half long film adaptation of the 1966 musical, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”. Most of the faculty of the Classics department at the College of Charleston including Dr. Johnson and Dr. Flores, the First-Year Experience class, and Classics 390 were in attendance to watch this movie and enjoy pizza and soda. There was an audience consisting of approximately 30 students and faculty in classroom 301A in Randolph Hall. The movie was originally produced as a Broadway play over 40 years ago and it was then released as a film. Multiple songs from the original performance in New York City, including the opening song of “Comedy Tonight” which was sung by Pseudolus, were included in the movie. …show more content…
The plot of the movie contained what was a story of how the main character Pseudolus, played by actor and comedian Zero Mostel, gets his freedom by helping one of the characters gain the love interest of Erronius’ daughter, Philia. Near the conclusion of the film, there was an interesting plot twist which is that the characters who were kidnapped by Erronius (Philia and Gloriosus) are found to be long-lost
This paper explores the Movie “It’s Complicated” a 2009 romantic comedy film, based of the novel written by Nancy Meyers. In this movie Jane and Jake Adler are a divorced couple of ten years. They start a secret love affair in New York, at their son’s graduation. While Jake is trying to have a family with his much younger wife, Agnes. I will be looking at if this is a possible mid-life crisis, genetics, or if it a developmental issue of Jake for wanting to be with his first wife, Jane.
The movie Grown-Ups (2010) is about a group of high school friends who reunite after their beloved high school basketball coach passes away during the summer. The main characters that make up this particular group of friends include Lenny Fedder (Adam Sandler), Eric Lamonsoff (Kevin James), Kurt Mckenzie (Chris Rock), Marcus Higgins (David Spade), and Rob Hillard (Rob Shneider). The childhood buddies come together at a funeral and decide to take their families on a getaway trip. They believe it would be a good idea to rent a rundown cabin on the lakeside and have their families enjoy the great outdoors while spending time with each other over the Fourth of July week. However, this particular group of adults now have kids and wives who are very
If you have not seen Dazed and Confused than you are really missing out. It is a great movie that relates from everything to High School to Sex, Drugs, and Rock n Roll. With an outstanding cast (from the past) it is a movie that everyone can relate to. Dazed and Confused reflects the lifestyle of kids that are entering high school for the first time, to seniors owning the school and being the "man" on compass. It portrays that freshman must watch their backs at all times and if you think you're as cool as the seniors, then you better watch out. There is a ritual that the seniors do to the freshman that have given so many people in reality a though of. With School being out for summer, in Dazed and Confused, it offers a great soundtrack from
This movie is mainly about a sixteen year old kid named Craig Gilner. Craig is a young kid who comes from a pretty normal family, has friends, goes to school and has somewhat a social life, but yet still suffers a psychological disorder known as depression. This disorder Craig is battling with makes him afraid he might commit suicide, so he seeks help by going to a psychiatric facility having the mindset that he would be prescribed some drugs or at most treated that same day. Little did he know that he was going to be checked into the facility and had minimum of 5 days before he could be discharged. While in this facility he encountered different types
Newsies, a classic musical based on the late 1800’s is a very entertaining and family friendly musical-- except for the few profane words. On a cloudy, partially rainy saturday morning, I laid out on the couch and watched the movie from the comfort of my own home. I was hesitant to watch this movie because I am not much of a musical person. About midway through I found myself at the edge of my seat hypnotized by the movie. As the movie drew to an end, I was completely sucked in and waited for something more. The movie I so dreadfully did not want to watch became something I did not want to end. In this movie the director and composer correlated their scenes and music perfectly together to touch the thoughts and emotions of the audience watching.
During the end of the 3rd Century, the Playwright Plautus wrote many of the first Roman comedies. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical comedy film adaptation of Plautus's comedies.Set in ancient Rome, many aspects of Roman theatre, including stock characters, were included in the film’s production. While the film is based off of multiple comedies, Plautus's Pseudolus character Calidorus is nearly identical to the film’s Hero. During the time Pseudolus was written, the Crisis of the Third Century led to up to 25% of Roman population being comprised of slaves(Southern). Of the many stock characters Platus included in his comedies, Calidorus/Hero, the son of Pseudolus’s owner and the stock character adulescens, best
The movie “Wit” was very touching story about 48 year old English professor, Vivian, who is diagnosed with Stage IV ovarian cancer. Her physician gets her to agree to an aggressive chemotherapy treatment which is a research experiment. He tells her that the therapy is the best way to cure here cancer. Vivian went through eight months of rigorous and often painful experimental treatment especially the final weeks of her life. One of her former student, Jason, is a researcher on the team. Jason is very intelligent person but insensitivity to Vivian. He always come in the room and question such as “how are you feeling today?”, which after while loses all meaning. On the other hand she has her primary care nurse, Susie, shows compassion and sense of code of ethics which brings her into conflicts at time with the physician.
I come from a very large Mexican family where there is a lot of meat, cheeses, fried food, butter and of course always a lot of sweets. Due to this diet there are many health related concerns in my family, three being diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, although high cholesterol seems to be more of a genetic issue rather than a food related one. Even so, the diet we maintain does not help lower it. Due to this diet and genetics, I have very high cholesterol myself; my doctor even shocked me by saying that I could have a heart attack by the time I’m 25. This obviously scared me and I knew then that there needed to be a change in my diet.
The Road to Rock Bottom is one of the most touching movies that I have watched this year. The movie tell the story the difficulties that sharecroppers, farmers, and farm workers before especially during the beginning of The Great Depression. I noted that this movie largely dwells on the distressing environmental factors such as drought and how they affected sharecroppers, migrant laborers, and farmers. I also noted that during this time, farmers greatly suffered as a result of falling farm prices that eventually led to foreclosures, indebtedness, homelessness, starvation, hardship, and diminishing returns. This movie also covers the shocking story of Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd, including how he interacted with many
Many aspects of the film pay clear homage to New Comedy. The plot is simplistic, focusing on the desire of a young man to get around the restrictions of his parents and gain the affections of the girl he loves. The characters, although not boring, are one-dimensional. Hero, the love-sick youth, has one hope in the film: to unite himself with Philia. Pseudolus, his slave, only wishes to earn his freedom. The life's work of Erronius is to find his children, each bestowed with a ring bearing an engraved gaggle of geese; and so on through the inhabitants of this depiction of Rome. Each character does whatever it takes to achieve their one goal in life, and this is what builds the frenetic disposition of the plot, causing twists and turns especially where the very determined instigator Pseudolus is concerned. There is no character development, however, and every character finishes the film with same endeavor he
The play has a number of major characters. The first one is Pseudolus, who is a slave in Rome and is trying throughout the play to win his freedom. The second one is Hero and is the son of the old man Senex. Hysterium is the other character and acts as the Senex
The way I see is that Americans are truly the villain in The Host. Americans do illegal, dangerous actions in Korean, which causes the monster, so Koreans did not like and support how the US operates in their country. For example, in the opening scene, an American ordered his Korean subordinate to dump all the dusty bottle into Han river. It is so crazy and irresponsible. Through the rest of the movie, there is an American doctor with a cross-eyed. That character looks like an idiot, and by extension make the country he represents look idiotic too. Finally, when the US Military in the film decided to use Agent Yellow to cleansing the area and to kill the monster. Koreans organized demonstrations to against the release of Agent Yellow by the
Part 1 - In American author's 2009 book, The Help, the primary thesis is the relationship between Black maids and white households in Jackson, Mississippi during the early 1960s. The story is really told from three perspectives, Aibileen and Minny are Black women, both maids, and Skeeter is the nickname of Eugenia Phelan, daughter of a prominent White family. Skeeter has just finished school and hopes to become a writer. In general, the relationship between the Black maids and the White employers is six sided: On one side we have the White employers who have three views: 1) Their personal and private beliefs that can range from extreme scorn and bias to kindness regarding race; 2) Their public persona that must have the "proper" attitude about Blacks and "the help," and 3) Their employer attitude, which is condescending and parental. The Black view also has three segments: 1) Their personal and private beliefs that usually range from understanding not all Whites are the same and an extreme love and empathy for the White children for whom they care; 2) The public persona that is deferential, polite, and stoic to their White bosses; and 3) Their attitude and view among the Black community, which usually separates the "poor and ignorant but rich" White souls from the Black view of family and common sense. All in all, the relationship is contentious, phony, and based on economic advantage.
There are many different types of film and film genres. A film can fit into more than one genre, but there are some genres that are more general than others. Some examples of film genre are animated, science fiction, documentary, comedy, and historical fiction. Within each genre, there are also specific characteristics that help support themes and story lines within that genre.
