A minister is a leader or a pillar of the Church. As pillars of the Church of Christ, we are extensions, or mouth piece, of the Church Administration. As a leader, we should know the situation of those we are watching over; in this case, the brethren. A leader is somewhat similar to a boss, but they have some differences that keeps them apart. A leader does whatever it takes to get the situation under control or accomplished in a manner that helps the team be where they need to be (or progress).
Leader according to Merriam-Webster, “a person who has commanding authority or influence” (“leader”, Entry 2). A leader does not gain the respect of his or her group members because they need to earn it through physical team labor. On the other hand, a boss gets the respect on the spot whether his or her team members like it or not. According to Jeffery J. Fox in his book, How to Become a Great Boss: The Rules for Getting and Keeping the Best Employees, it states that leadership, modesty, and hiring the precise employees who could complete a specific tack and excluding those who are not willing to take the challenge determinations of becoming a boss. However, Mr. Fox also says:
“Great boss are always great leaders. But great leaders can be frightful bosses, terrible managers...” (Author’s notes).
Meaning that great leaders can be bosses if they abuse or over use their power to their group members, which leads to cases of disagreements and divisions. This brings down the reputation
There is a great importance put on business leadership, this is directly due to how a business not only functions but in how fruitful the company can become. A great leader essentially can take a business plan that is weak yet turn it into a success, whereas a poor leader stands a higher chance of ruining the best of business plans. That is why it is essential to develop effective leadership throughout a companies entire management program at all levels. How does one develop or retain strong leadership? Companies must be focused on hiring strategies that encompass very specific parameters, building from within whilst creating a strong foundation for employee development and succession planning. Leadership is essential in any organization. The style and theory embraced determines whether the company will or will not achieve their goals. in all cases theory must be embraced, as a companies theory, style, and strategy is greatly dependent on the industry the company is in (Sadler, 2014). “The behavioral theory is one of the widely used theories of management. It suggests that leaders are made and not born. It gives room for training to install leadership traits in leaders at the expense of denying them a chance. There are various leadership styles embraced by companies (Cyert, & March, 2005).” This paper takes a look at the management styles of two specific
Leadership is, and always has been, a vital aspect of social and economic constructs. It is essential to the survival of societies, industries, organizations, and virtually any group of individuals that come together for a common purpose. However, leadership is difficult to define in a single, definitive sense. As such, theories of leadership, what constitutes a great leader, and how leaders are made have evolved constantly throughout history, and still continue to change today in hopes of improving upon our understanding of leadership, its importance, and how it can be most effective in modern organizational cultures.
"There is a difference between being a leader and being a boss. Both are based on authority. A boss demands blind obedience; a leader earns his authority through understanding and trust." Klaus Balkenhol
For centuries leaders have been analyzed in order to determine what the traits and characteristics of a successful leader are. Leadership, as defined by Koontz and Weihrich (2008) is “the art or a process of influencing people so that they will strive willingly and enthusiastically toward the achievement of group goals” (p. 311). Leadership plays an important role in employee’s participation, creativity, recruitment to an organization, their commitment to the organization, and productivity levels. Over the years, there have been a number of theories surrounding leadership such as the “Great Man” theory, which, according to Riaz and Haider (2010), “assumes that leaders are born and have innate qualities, therefore, leaders
In addition, leadership itself can be described in various forms and through the highlight of different skill sets, but the one thing that all definitions have in common is that “leadership involves influencing the attitudes, beliefs, behaviours and feelings of other people” Spector’s work (as cited in Curtis, de Vries, & Sheerin, 2011, p.306). When the skill set of a leader is compared to that of a manager, true differences are noted. Some of these key differences are apparent even in the approach utilized to reach the desired goals. While a manager directs, a leader transforms, a manager sustains and a leader improves, a manager controls, a leader motivates, a manager’s focus is on short-term goals and a leader’s is long-term based, managers ask how and when, while
For some reasons, the managers’ positions have been seen in a negative way for many years. However, this does not change the essentiality of this position in any organization, especially in business set-ups. There have been a constant confusion between the role of leaders and managers, and what should be clearly established is that these two roles do not share the same meaning. Being a manager does not guarantee that one is already a good leader. However, leaders can be effective managers. This only means that in order for managers to be effective and avoid negative feedback, they should have sufficient knowledge and
To me, a leader is somebody who exhibits exceptional devotion to his or her team, and is willing to do whatever it takes to unite the team. A leader injects a feeling of positivity and guides others to achieve predetermined goals. This leadership is the process in which a person influence a group (adherents) to accomplish a shared objective. The objective is achieved by mutual affirmation and a cohesive behavior. One of the end goals of leadership is to get results through others, and the method for achieving this include the ability to develop goal oriented, cohesive groups. Since knowledge is power naturally, for the individuals who trust power is the quintessence of leadership will presume that the individuals who have more knowledge and insight will make great leaders. This is not generally correct. I think
Leadership. We all know great leaders when we see them. They are the one who inspire us, they are committed and honest. Winston Churchill, General Patton both exemplify the qualities of a great leader. But how often do we think about the qualities that make a leader substandard. We all know from the leaders who did bad things. Adolph Hitler always comes to mind but was he a bad leader or just a bad man. In this week’s class paper, we read about the pitfalls of a bad leader. In her article” The Value of Valuing Employees Six ways leaders inadvertently curb innovation, motivation” author Christine Comaford explores the six factors that are detrimental to a leader and their leadership abilities. In my following paper, I am taking a look at those six pitfalls and the different strategies an organization can initiate to correct those drawbacks.
Respect goes a long way. Respect does not simply mean that “I am nice to you” or “you are nice to me.” Respect means not seeing others as objects; it means seeing others as people. Respect means understanding the needs, objectives, and challenges of the person other than yourself, adjusting your efforts to help where possible, and following through by measuring that impact to make sure it is helpful. Respect is caring for those around you. When you respect others, care for them, and not have the expectation for them to do the same in return, that is true leadership.
According to Bill Hull, “While certain pockets of evangelicalism have grown, overall, the church is in a decline. Many congregations can attest to Hull’s assessment, in that, churches in America are indeed experiencing sharp declines in its numbers of baptisms and church attendance. Over

I believe that for bosses to be effective that they should take the steps needed to ensure that they are feared rather than loved as seen as many rulers of various countries of the world. If they are feared rather than loved then that country that has the feared leader will be a strong country as seen in multiple times periods throughout history. We will look at the time period where Cesare Borgia was a feared leader and not a loved ruler. We will also look at the time period where Joseph Stalin was a feared leader.
According to Webster, a leader is a person who directs a force or unit and has commanding authority or influence. (Leader, 2016) Individuals in positions of power, such as the President of the United States and others, exhibit specific characteristics and qualities that exemplify power, respect, authority and strength. A leader is only as good as his team. If the leader’s team fails, the leader fails. If everyone in the team operates as a unit, the leader will be successful. Examining a team, every member should consider himself or herself as an asset. Being a leader of a team, the leader should take responsibility in that role. The leader should make every member of that team feel utilized and efficient. The leader should be willing and ready
I witnessed leaders who were neither personable nor pleasant. These individuals did not communicate with or mentor their subordinates, did not provide guidance and micro-managed all actions. These leaders simply dictated their wants and berated subordinates who did not comply. They were strict and harsh; the embodiment of my younger self’s vision of what leadership was. Although I wanted to be a leader, I knew I never could exhibit leadership the way they did. I was too shy, too caring and most of all, I did not agree with their leadership methods. However, I did learn from them. I learned what not to do. As Lou Holtz stated in his book Wins, Losses, and Lessons (2006), “You can learn a lot by observing, as well as by performing” (p. 17).
In brief order, the role of a pastor or leader is to be a servant leader. The Bible provides pastors and leaders in a Christian church with the best model of a servant leader in Jesus Christ. According to Thorsten Grahn (2011), “Jesus submitted his own life to sacrificial service under the will of (Luke 22:42), and he sacrificed his life freely out of service for others (John 10:30). He came to serve (Matthew 20:28) although he was God’s son and was thus more powerful than any other leader in the world. He healed the sick (Mark 7:31-37), drove out demons (Mark 5:1-20), was recognized as Teacher and Lord (John 13:13), and had power over the wind and the sea and even over death (Mark 4:35-41; Matthew 9:18-26. In John 13:1-17 Jesus gives … responsibility of the house-servant” (Grahn, 2011, p. 2).
