Gender Equality is a big issue throughout the world, but what exactly is it? Well to answer that, it is the view that everyone should receive equal treatment and not be discriminated against based on gender. Today, most women are getting treated differently compared to men. Whether it is based on pay gap, power, or strength the problem comes up. Men think they are stronger and better than women and this upsets women because it makes them feel like they don’t have a place in this world. This is where feminism comes into place. I chose this topic because I can relate to it more than the racial option, although now it could be about the same.

Women began to climb the ladder and finally became equal to men, well almost. Women’s rights include, but is not limited to positions that any man can hold, promotions that were not allowed beforehand last but not least socially and legal equality. As women, we can’t continue to yell inequality when we are not on the same playing field as men. We, women, have more leverage than the men. Aspiring to be like men would require us to also go the same extra mile that the male has to also. Women’s right is not for us to be equal while also being held on a pedestal at the same time. Equality goes both ways, it is for us, as well as men.

When the Founding Fathers brashly declared that all men are created equal in the United States Declaration of Independence, they conveniently forgot to include the word “women” in that statement. In my own pursuit of happiness I have been oppressed on a myriad of occasions due to my gender. As a female in the United States Army, I have been told by my male counterparts that I should be in the kitchen rather than in the field. I have been denied access to branches in the military that are said to be unfit for females to serve in, and I have watched as male soldiers rank up both faster and higher than female soldiers. Being a woman in today’s society means unequal pay, sexism, and overall general oppression.

Throughout history, women have been abused, controlled, and belittled by men. Even today there are some subtle differences seen between a man and a woman’s standing, such as pay salary, job promotions, and physical and mental state. Modern feminism tries to solve these types of issues, but typically this only stirs the pot and creates more of a problem than any of it is worth. Lately, modern feminists over exaggerate dilemmas in the country and complain about things that in no way compare to the struggles of the oppressed women in past, specifically in the 1890s to the 1960s, and this is why it is no longer needed in society. Have you ever heard a man say “I am a victim of gender inequality” or have you heard about a campaign to help men get through inequality? Without you even telling me, I already know what your answer will be….no, you haven’t. Why? Well, it is because men face a different type of inequality I like to call silent sexism, a lot of you are probably sitting there and wondering to yourself “What is he talking about”. I am talking about those things that have been synced into our lives that we don’t even register it as being sexist.

What is it going to take for people to be equal in this world? What is the point of putting men on such a high pedestal when they are no different than women? Why are women perceived as the “weaker” gender? All of these are questions that people have and want answers to. Its’ safe to say that Werhane, Posig, Gundry, Ofstein, and Powell were spot on when they mentioned that we live in a male dominated world. Anything that has to do with power is generally associated with a male figure. These instant thoughts that women are less likely to own a business, or are more likely to live in poverty need to come to an end.

The main weakness of feminist theories is that they are from a woman centered viewpoint. While the theories also mention social problems not strictly related to women, it still comes from that viewpoint. This creates a weakness of perspective, men and women do see the world differently. If you have a theory that is solely from the perspective of men or women then you are removing something intangible from that theory. Theories should be put forth that take into account a woman’s perspective, but the theories should also have the male perspective so that both viewpoints are clearly visible. It may seem a small complaint, but this small complaint can be the difference between seeing the bigger picture, or missing something critical because you only took a cursory look.

Some may even say that everyone is equal. Women in the 1970’s never would have thought they could own a credit card under their own name, or even legally get an abortion. Women at the time didn't know if they would get to keep their job if they were pregnant. Now women can do all of this ,and even vote. Women have changed history dramatically over this period of time where some would say that men and women were equal. The change through history in jobs, and congress should be applauded compared to the way women's rights used to be. Women used to have little to no rights, and their only job to the world was to provide children, cook and clean. Now women are dominating and surprising the world. Women's rights have improved dramatically over the years and hopefully will continue to change women's rights till everyone is truly equal.
