Although some individuals may wish or even naively claim that we live in a post-racial society, the reality in twenty first century America is that individual and institutional racism continues to take a horrible toll on young people of color, who are at greater risk of race-based violence, unjust criminalization, as well as economic, political and educational discrimination. The powerful advantages that come from being born white are immeasurable and painfully real. It is critical that white individuals recognize the depth of their privilege, but doing nothing more than that can appear self-congratulatory, and as an attempt to exempt them from responsibility. Martin Luther King without any details that support her purpose. Not a single line of one of King’s monumental speeches or his historically significant views that address race and poverty in America are cited. Sadly, the author also misses the point that most acts of racism, and racial violence, perpetrated every day, receive little attention or outcry, certainly not on national television. She also fails to include real people of color in her own life and real examples of her own white privilege as it relates to them. Certainly, if the author has truly gained insight into her own white privilege, it would have been a much more effective use of ethos and pathos to use an example of at least one person of color who may have been unjustly impacted by hers or her sons’ white privilege.
Yet, the most significant flaw in this essay can be seen through the author’s simplistic view of the scope of racial injustice. Remarkably, the author only refers to white privilege in terms of its impact on what she calls “the problems facing Black America.” She fails to acknowledge or perhaps has no insight that white privilege involves the preference for ‘whiteness’ over all persons of color. Every non-white group is impacted by individual and institutional racism. Every non-white group grows up with the knowledge that their white peers have certain automatic privileges. Every child of color has to learn to navigate through the floodwaters of racism
