I was really excited about the afternoon performance I was attending at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. This is essentially because I have always been obsessed with fairy tales and getting the chance to see one in action before my eyes was something to die for. Once Upon A Mattress centers around the “ ‘shy’ Winnifred the Woebegone” who takes her chance at marrying Dauntless the Drab. However, she has to get through the tests prepared by the overbearing Queen Aggravain. In short, this is a musical parody of Han Christian Andersen’s The Princess and the Pea.
The play began with an introduction to the orchestra that will be performing live alongside the play. I was amazed to find out about this only now. In addition, seeing that the tickets to this show was also not that expensive, I was truly thankful that I could actually kill two birds with one stone, having seen a play and an orchestra at the same time. At the beginning, an inaccurate version of The Princess and the Pea was shown before hand as the minstrel points out that the truth was far worse. This was of utmost importance to the audience to know so that they could set their expectations early on. The true story essentially begins with a test of wit for an unfortunate Princess #12, who fails miserably. I particularly liked the riddles as they helped to engage the thinking skills of the audience as well.
Having an affinity towards villains, I truly loved Queen Aggravain’s performance, which was
This production was ripe with humour, witticisms and a valuable moral message, it entertained the audience and showed a different side of the elderly most would not perceive. Through brilliantly written extended dialogue, tension creating arguments and fleshed out and realistic relationships between characters portrayed the plays dramatic meaning clearly and effectively whilst keeping audiences young and old
In the playbill, it informs you about eight individual characters as they are part of the Cornley University Drama Society that will be presenting its debut tragedy play, The Murder at Haversham Manor. The writers capture your attention by incorporating a stage manager, Annie, and Trevor a lighting/sound operator that make you believe anything can go wrong. Each character is not just funny, they are all hysterical, and if you don’t watch it then that is your loss. Everything throughout the play is intentional, such as while Trevor is on a balcony operating the lighting and sound, there is a spotlight on him, so come with an open mind. The show begins with the newly elected director of the Drama Society, Chris Bean, who is on stage to introduce the murder mystery play, The Murder at Haversham Manor. The spotlight is misplaced on him and the laughs begin because of how careless Trevor is while operating the
On the night of the show, one is filled with anticipation of seeing the play laced with a hint of ambiguity because of not knowing just what to expect. Getting dressed and arriving at the theatre brings about more enthusiasm; once the mixture of people with different cultures and expectations is seated in the theatre one experience an ardor of emotions. The interaction with the crowd sounds of low chatter and sight of the person's attire add to the excitement of being in a place that can make the magic happen.
The audience is seated, the lights dim, and all of a sudden, through wild anticipation, the music cues as a notification that the show is about to begin. Theater is a creative outlet for the soul to paint a picture towards showcasing a short story. This past weekend, I attended a play at Crabpot Players Theater to observe a parody of one of Shakespeare’s most famous pieces, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. As a whole the play was fairly decent, but there were a few minor issues that held the piece back. It is officially time to analyze the good, the bad, and the ugly.
The play was about a girl who wanted to become an astronomer. Her name was Henrietta Leavitt and she goes off to study at Harvard and figures out the patterns of stars. In the end she has figured out world changing information about the sky and the solar system. The story worked really well because the actors showed us almost exactly what happened. It was interesting to learn how they measure the stars and how they figure out the patterns. I loved the actual script because it was not confusing at all.
Young children often hear many fairy tales growing up, one of the most famous is the tale of a princess kissing a frog to magically transform the frog into a prince so that they could live happily ever after. In 2009, Walt Disney and Pixar Films released The Princess and the Frog which portrays different aspects of Louisiana’s history during the 1920s. The film tells the story for a young ambitious chef, Tiana, and her struggles to follow her dreams due to her race, her sex, and the time period.
Sadly when I arrived at the theater I was not even sure I would be able to focus on the show, for my mother who was meant to see this production with me yet was unable to. Due to unforeseeable circumstances that neither one of us could for see and so with all of this hanging over head I was really hoping to get a laugh from this play, which it did. This was not the first time that I had come to see a play at Boise Little Theater, but definitely this was the first time that I had done it on my own. Which was a tad
I gathered my experiences as my compass of what to expect when I come to the theatre. I did some google search before hand to get a glimpse of what to look out for but that was it. Upon entering the theatre, we got some flyers. As always, I looked for a quote or something that hints at the overall meaning or plot of the play. The paper said that the play is about despair hope of outcast people, people who are not 'normal ' in the general sense.
This was the first play or theatre performance that I have attended. I was unsure of what to expect, but I heard great things about this play. Furthermore, the first aspect of this production that caught my attention was the design of the set. The design gave the feeling of a run down urban neighborhood by making the outer parts of the stage look like an old brick building. The building looked like one you would find in a low-income area or projects. The scenery of the play set the stage for what type of production this would be. I especially liked the way they carefully chose not to place just any kind of props on the stage. The dusty
The idea of the play is “a director who left the kids… on their own,” said Fiona Connelly, actor, “And they try to put together as many plays as they can because they have a whole crowd waiting… and they have no idea what the play they were supposed to be doing was so they just find a bunch of scripts and throw something together.”
When I first heard the play I figured it was obviously centered around the title, but I was hoping for a little more to it. Once I read the description and it stated a family friendly play for children 4+, I knew I had to be in for some kind of treat. I figured I was going to be the only college student attending this play, then I walked in and
2. In your own words write one paragraph that describes the plot of the play. (10 points)
In the beginning, the audience is introduced to the entirety of the plot in the prologue. It truly is magnificent, Shakespeare summarized his entire play in the beginning! But, enough complimenting the man. The basic tale is two families hate each other, there children fall in love, love is forbidden due to the parents, and then the children end up killing
There have been many animated movies that were very popular during the 1940’s and 50’s. Some are still watched and have been recreated in today’s times: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Dumbo. Although not the first animated movie to be created, Fantasia (1940) was the first movie to connect classical music with animations.
The room is dark for there is no light shining through the window next to the drawer like any other day. A folded paper in the bucket is settled next the drawer, that always have been cleaned, but not this time when I looked. I can smell the fresh tea where it is sitting on top of the night stand. I am sitting in a chair next to my parent’s bed with my ill mother laying on top of her bed.
