I decided for my play review that I would go see Mary Poppins The Broadway Musical at the Jefferson Davis Fine Arts building this past weekend. The play is based on the stories of P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney Film; the original music was by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, the book written by Julian Fellowes, and the co-creator of the original was Cameron Mackintosh.

On February 26th 2016, I went out with my friend to saw this event. It was the first time of my life to be in such production. I was not a fan of theaters. I thought they are boring. Now, my mind has changed because the play was amazing. So, on the next day,

Broward College, Central Campus Theater in building 6, on Sunday, the 1st of November. The play was performed by Broward College students. The type of stage was Proscenium stage with extended apron. I thought it was a little bit small, but it did not show as a problem. The pre-show was dark and a feel of suspense. I felt excited to see how everything would play out. The play takes place down south of Chicago in the 1950’s.

I will be honest with you I had a lot of trouble enjoying the play, like I said the dialect gave me trouble, plus my seats were not that great. This was the first play or theatre performance that I have attended. I was unsure of what to expect, but I heard great things about this play. Furthermore, the first aspect of this production that caught my attention was the design of the set. The design gave the feeling of a run down urban neighborhood by making the outer parts of the stage look like an old brick building. The building looked like one you would find in a low-income area or projects. The scenery of the play set the stage for what type of production this would be. I've been experiencing live productions for my whole life. My relationship with the performers was very strong. Usually, when I see a live production, I look for character development, change, and believability. Bingo:The Winning Musical did not change what I look for in a play, but it did give me a new experience for looking at musicals.

I could feel myself being happy and laughing. The time was running but I was too focused to care about it. The stage was full because it had a variety of characters. There was minimal use of props. The big circular shaped giant seemed real which was beautifully designed. The catchy thing about the show was a girl saying Chicken licken many times which was noticeable and I think it caught the audience attention. The costumes were also beautifully chosen. As I'm a girl, I liked the dresses that were used by the princess. There was also a sound of the sky falling and there was a bright lighting of the stage. The play was beautifully played. I was not distracted by the show even though it had many characters and ideas going on. I knew the actors could show their sense of comedy and wit from the first play and I was eager to see how they would carry out the dismal aspects this show. This production was a drastic change in the cast’s acting abilities, but they presented the production extraordinarily well. I had some damage after first week that I came to the show in that I was not impressed with the play. I had the behind the scenes knowledge that many of the actors were ill, and I also first attended the Sunday matinée, which I expected to be lower in energy than a night performance, but the energy was extremely low and the show tended to drag. During my next attendance I was so pleased to see my classmates have a high-energy performance that I was sad to see end. Majority of the references to the stories wouldn’t be able to be grasped, if the audience member didn’t read the books that were mentioned. The set was pretty basic, it looked more like an office , than a living room. I did like the digital projection that was done before each scene of the play. It was as if each part of the play was a chapter of a book, rather than a scene. I loved the small skits that each character did, before each part of the play. The skits added a little flare to the play. The book club wasn’t the type of play I would choose to see on my own. The actors’ acting seemed forced at times and I would not go see this play a second time around. I would recommend this play to my friends , because although it seems dull to me , some of them might actually find it

Before starting, I am glad to see this play on the list because my sister got me interested in this play when she read it in her Literature class a couple of years ago.
