Communication is of severe importance for the comprehension of others about you, and comprehending yourself enables you to project yourself to others more comfortably. The Johari Window model is a psychological tool that is used to enhance the individual’s perception on others. This model can help you to the understanding and training of self-awareness, personal development, and interpersonal relationships. The Johari Window model is composed by four quadrants or areas which can be related and affected by each other. However, for the purposes on this paper only two of the four quadrants are going to be taken in consideration; the public area and the private area. The comprehension of the limitation of the private area is the key to the improvement …show more content…
This allows them to be able to receive and to give feedback for the improvement of the ‘public-self’ for themselves and others, improving interpersonal relationship. This is the case for Mr. Shata, in the story of “A Muslim Leader in Brooklyn, Reconciling 2 World” by Andrea Elliott. Mr. Shata becomes the iman of a community in Brooklyn, NY, one year after the incident worldwide known as the 9/11. Even with the complexity of his position as the leader of a Muslim community in New York City, after the terrorist attack committed by Muslim persons in the city, due to his open-self he became a support for not only the Muslim community, but for whole town. However, he is not the only one that gives support and feedback to the community. In the article, Ms. Elliott states for Mr. Shata "I went from a country where a sheik would speak and the people listened to one where the sheik talks and the people talk back." The change that he experienced from moving from a country where he would talk and not receive feedback to a country where he would talk and the community would talk back giving him feedback allowed him to expand his open area. The expansion of his public-self transformed him “from a person of rigidity to flexibility” becoming a better leader for the Muslim community in Brooklyn, as well as for the non-muslim …show more content…
This panel can be known as the ‘hidden self’ or ‘hidden area’, in this area information remains unknown to others, but the individual is conscious knower about it. This hidden information can represent –feelings, experiences, fears, secrets, immoral intentions- any personal information that you avoid to discus and reveal for reasons of shamefulness, vulnerability, and/or embarrassment. It is completely normal for an individual to be very personal and private about certain information and feelings. Indeed, certain information, experiences, and feelings should remain hidden. Oscar Wilde writes in his preface to The Picture of Dorian Gray; “Art is at once surface and symbol. Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril.” Art can sometimes express feeling, ideas, and/or perception of things in life, however this information is not always clear, it can be hidden, it can be private information. Therefore, in one of Wilde’s most famous epigrams we can compare art to the private-self of an individual. This epigram refers to those go attempt to go and see beneath the surface of work, or in this case a person, do so at their own risk. The disclosure of some information can be dangerous and counterproductive for an interpersonal relationship. However, not all hidden information is counterproductive, and so is better positioned in the open
“This is where you can find your soul, if you dare.” (Anderson, pg 10) This belief comes from the mind of the Melinda, the progantists, art teacher, Mr. Freeman. Art is truly a door to the mind of an individual, showing things that people aren’t able to say. It shows through images and colors what many people aren’t able to express in words, events and thoughts speaking through the medium. Art is growing as a use of therapy to heal and tell. Psychologists analyze their patients art at a psychological level, interpreting the image into words. One of the theories in art therapy, which is seen throughout “Speak”, is the idea that unconscious thoughts are expressed in an image. (Irvings)These images then can be explained rationally. Melinda’s three major art images, the half dead trees, turkey bone, and cubism represent this theory.
Understanding yourself is an important step of effectively communicating with others. The two theories presented this week were both interesting topics as they provided me with an opportunity to look at my own behaviors in introspection. The theories for this weeks discussion are the social judgement theory and the expectancy violations theory.
Oscar Wilde is an esteemed writer and his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, is a dark novel that paints the deathly consequences that resulted from choosing between right and wrong. In the novel, Dorian Gray, who is the protagonist, wished to remain young forever. This wish came true as he sold his soul to a painting and the painting grew older instead of himself. This allowed Dorian to preserve his youth forever. Many people have regarded Wilde’s novel as an immoral book and have lashed out criticism for the moral horrors in the novel (Buzwell). However, Wilde argued that the book is too moral as it shared the truth of being a human being. Despite being written many years ago, this novel is still relevant today and carries the important
Muslim leaders and communities across the nation realized a need to educate their non-Muslim neighbors about Islam. Many Muslim communities opened their doors to the public, inviting non-Muslims to open lectures on Islam, and encouraging questions from non-Muslims. Even so, right after post-9/11 many American Muslim women who had been veiling decided no longer to do so in order to look “less
In both of the Abrahamic faiths of Christianity, and Judaism, and the religion of Islam, all have similar roots in how it formed, who formed it and their different forms of getting their word out. For any religion and the reasoning of religion is to bring the people that practice it together and be more unified than not practicing it. In most of these time of unification before it there was dark troubles, and with these troubles, the new hope, of the prophets and their teachings, come out of it.
The text uses language that is comprehensible and it is organised in a logical manner making it easy to follow. The work is separated into sections using sub-headings which clearly identify the themes being discussed. Footnotes appear frequently giving further explanations of points being made and also direct us to sources with added information. This work provides us with an excellent understanding of how we as individuals present ourselves to others when interacting in our daily lives.
Further concepts of self, awareness and self-schemas could be effectively used for self-development. It is said that what we think of ourselves, is what we make out of ourselves. Hence self-schema could lead to actions resulting in a state which we want ourselves to be. Generally if we create and idea of self and interact with others in the society, it gives an impression to the society about the way we think and the way we receive things from the society. Great leaders have a dream and confidence in them which is reflected in their actions and the interaction with the society. Hence it is important to be self-aware and understand self very clearly. Further self-concept refers to the act of holding ourselves when we
To create and to express is always molded by one’s own experiences and it is through those that art and expression are poignant. Every brushstroke in a Van Gogh is an expression of himself, every color in a Rothko is an extension of his rationality and viewpoint, and every letter and word in Baldwin’s art are his own. They are both his perspective and himself at the same time, existing within a liminality of expression and of self-portraiture. It is within a state of societal rejection that this introspection truly flourishes and the reflection can most vividly be seen in
Throughout our whole lives, we spend the majority of our time communicating in some way or form. Many people in today’s society are uninformed of all the key concepts and importance of communication, such as interpersonal communication. These issues reflect what Wilde tried to conceal in his own private life: posing, living a double life and escaping from
This model allows the user to understand the differences between known and unknown situations and according to the level of self-awareness how one’s reactions, behavior and thinking patterns change (Stockdale, 2013). It is a “simple model for self-awareness” (Pareek, 1978 P. 170) and it is the simplicity of the model which helps the author analyze her characteristics to a great extent and easily highlight her strengths and weaknesses. The Johari Window is also considered to be an effective tool in understanding the mismatch between her intentions and the perceptions of others when the process of feedback is underway (Newell, 2002).
The Nation of Islam impacted many African American people during its time. This Black Muslim nation demanded adherence to basic teachings, which included racial separation, white devilry, and the coming Armageddon. None of these basic teachings supported James Baldwin’s perceptions, which pitied whites for their inability to see through the color curtain and embrace differences that whites and blacks held together to create a better, inexorable, and supreme nation. Leaders such as Elijah Muhammad and Malcolm X provided the vision of the Nation of Islam. These moguls proved to be two of the most powerful leaders of their time. They paved their way through history and rightfully landed a spot belonging to
Living a life without guilt or shame can be astonishingly enticing. Many people, especially in Victorian England, agreed with this notion. Many distinguished authors, poets, and other influential members of society affirmed this belief. Among them was notorious author and playwright, Oscar Wilde. Wilde was a known supporter of Aestheticism, a movement in which there are no morals to be found in art and where life is meant to be lived in pursuit of passion with no room or regard for moral uprightness. Wilde lived a very flamboyant life, and most critics would agree that his novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, highlights this lifestyle which focuses on surrendering to one’s temptations. A closer look at the work, however, instead brings the reader to a different conclusion. The harrowing tale of Dorian Gray’s rise and fall clearly criticizes the Aesthetic Movement, which gives way to the idea of surrendering to one’s whims as thoughtlessly as one would like, and instead draws attention to the direct relationship between art and morality.
Communication is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as, “the act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone else.” Communication is something everyone in the world does on a daily basis. Just like there are many different kinds of people; there are many different kinds of forms of communications as well. People are complex structures that require many parts working together; some of those parts can be seen and others cannot. The concept of self-awareness can be explained as a four-quadrant model called the Johari window. It includes thing that you know, and do not know, about yourself; as well as things that other know, and do not know, about you. In other words, the Johari Window enables people to view themselves as others see them, which give a unique perspective way of looking at relationships and the communication process. In this essay we will go over other some “self analysis” questions that include awareness and perception. As far as my own personal communication style goes, the areas that stand out to me the most are my listening skills and the way I make eye contact.
Throughout history, there have been countless different people who have tried to make their impact or difference in the world in their own way. One of the most popular or common ways that people have tried to affect or change the world has been through bringing in a new religion into the world to change and affect the minds of people globally. Even though countless people have tried to create or bring a new religion in the world, only a handful were successful in actually selling their religion well enough for it to survive to the present day. Muhammad ibn Abdullah, long for Muhammad, is the prophet and founder of the religion of Islam, the second most popular religion in present day followed by more than 23 percent of the world's population.
