Many parents nowadays are unable to restrict their children’s use of social media since they do not monitor them from the beginning. Thus, this excessive use of electronic devices by children and young adults, has led to many problems on them at different levels. In the text “A New Generation”, Larry Rosen mentions that multitasking social media for socialization, communication, and connection leads to behavioral and psychological problems (Rosen 2). She also believes that electronic devices can disturb the balance between screen time and real time due to the interruption of phone calls, television, and text messaging during meals (Rosen 4). In addition, “the obsessive use and constant stimulation, especially for pre-teen children, can lead
In our 21st century, social media has a huge role in our every day lives and that places a responsibility on parents to monitor what children watch on the screen.
Social media and technology are an incredible enhancement of the modern world. If properly balanced and educated, embracing these technologies is a rewarding and exciting journey through the World Wide Web. This electronic social and technological society we have created is the inevitable part of every child’s life; it 's hard to protect them from the adverse impacts of this society. Smart technology improves on a daily basis, the costs associated with smartphones reduced to nearly nothing, resulting in the number of adolescents and teens with them to increase. Parents want their children to have the newest technology; it is common to see children between six and eight years of age with smartphones. Age plays an important factor in whether embracing technology is acceptable. Young adolescents and some teens are not emotionally equipped to deal with the issues that accompany social media and technology and parents have no idea how to educate, monitor or safeguard them from these technologies.
Media multitasking is associated with symptoms of depression and social anxiety according to Mark W. Becker, Reem Alzahabi, and Christopher J. Hopwood’s study. These people conducted an experiment containing 318 participants. And the 318 people completed self-inventory tests to measure their media use, personality, depression, and social anxiety. The study suggests that the increased use of media multitasking show a risk to develop problems related to the individual’s mood and anxiety levels. With that being said this problem is raising concerns that media is replacing face to face interactions. “While overall media use among America’s youth increased by 20 percent over the past decade, the amount of time spent multitasking with media (simultaneously interacting with more than one form of media) increased by over 119 percent over the same period”( Becker, M. W., Alzahabi, R., & Hopwood, C. J. (2013)). Media multitasking has now been associated with attention control, meaning how to filter out any useless information and how to ignore distractions. Also in this study they looked at not only mood changes and anxiety disorders they also looked at traits of neuroticism and extraversion. All of these
“In less than the span of a single childhood, Americans have merged with their machines, staring at a screen for at least eight hours a day, more time than we spend on any other activity including sleeping. Teens fit some seven hours of screen time into the average school day; 11, if you count time spent multitasking on several devices. When President Obama last ran for office, the iPhone had yet to be launched. Now smartphones outnumber the old models in America, and more than a third of users get online before getting out of bed.”
According to the authors, Greenwood, Perrin, and Duggan, there is a variety of ways in which americans utilize online networking to seek out information and interact with others. A long time back, individuals did not utilize the PC to finish a task of a class nor did they connect with others through messages or through online networking. In the article, Youth, Education, and Technology by Ryan Leys, he expressed that “The downsides of technology have proven to be prominent over the last decade, in particular with the growing popularity of the smartphone. While technology can be used in schools to further the education of students, it can also be used in ways equally as harmful.” Now, people send text messages or emails as opposed to looking at the other individual in their eyes when talking. Young children utilize acronyms such as “lol,” “wya,” “wyd,” as opposed to spelling it out. According to our authors, “too much hypertext and multimedia content has been linked in some kids to limited attention span, lower comprehension, poor focus, greater risk for depression and diminished long-term memory”(Clinton and Steyer, 2012). Not only has it affected young children, but as well as adults. Researchers have proven how it interrupts with their sleeping schedule, how it causes stress for both men and women, and how it increases
The excessive utilization of technology in today’s society is a major contributing factor to distraction among the general population, consequently exposing our youth to adult-like subjects. The exaggeration of social networking sites alone, has led parents to disregard their routine obligations, therefore setting bad examples for their children and ignoring the responsibility of remaining great parental role models. Our technological advances have significantly promoted the ease of utilization of all the current social media sites. Once upon a time we chatted online, emailed and surfed the web with only the use of a computer. In today 's modern world there are hand held devices such as cell phones and tablets, with a simple swipe of the touch screen your entire account is accessible. Over the past 10-15 years, many new social networks have been created and they seem to gradually become more appealing to the average human. Every time a new website is customized, the contents are more advanced than the last, making communication almost effortless, allowing for more rapid use. "Around 59 percent of children have already used a social network by the time they are ten, and 43 percent have messaged strangers online by the age of twelve"(Williams 1). Caretakers need to start being more observant to the dangers that their kids are facing and monitor their use, so that they are able to appropriately instill safety guidelines. An

New mediums for social networking and digital communication are continually being created and integrated into the population. Thus, media multitasking has become increasingly prevalent in current society. And whilst past research has examined the effects of various media devices on social and cognitive development, little is known about the possible effects of media multitasking on various developmental processes. Up to date research is needed to discover possible implications of these new devices.
Social Media has been quite an issue in today’s society. Social media has become an issue with people of younger generations, especially those in school. Schools today have the biggest problem with controlling their students and the way they use their social media both on their own time and during school hours. Authors Steven Anderson and Bradley Shear have both addressed this problem in today's society in their articles that deeply describe what can and should be done to resolve the issue in schools. Anderson explains a way that a school can create their guidelines for device usage in schools while Shear explains how schools have illegally and legally prohibited social media and device usage in schools. Both authors have written their articles for mainly adults and especially for those who work for middle and high schools. Anderson’s article is the most informative article of the two as it has a better writing style and gives schools a better point of view as to how to resolve the social media problem in today’s society.
Technology is being invented every day, and children are growing up in a society where they are learning to use and misuse the internet. According to NSPCC, “One in five, 8 to 11-year old’s and seven in ten, 12 to 15-year old’s have a social media profile” (“Ofcom” 72). The internet can be very helpful and educational in today’s world if used properly parents just need to be sure that children are using it properly. Parents are worried about the predators and lack of physical activity that social media and the internet has caused on future generations. Haven’t parents really caused this problem on their own? As parents it’s time to unite to solve the problem, all that’s required is to become educated, and to educate our children. Children misusing the internet can lure predators, have children suffering from cyber bullying, and can cause children to have attitude and behavioral problems.
Nowadays, many people are using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and so on. Since the Internet has rapidly propagated, social media has progressed rapidly. The widespread use of mobile devices to access the internet gradually transformed the nature of our social interactions. Most people use smart phones, iPhones or mobile internet devices to easily access social network. It helps us contact friends, family, and other people even if they live far away. Social media has many advantages; but also, it can be abused in moments by young children if we are not careful, because they can easily access social media. We need to understand and regulate the use of social media by young children.
Social media has a huge impact on young people’s lives. Over 60% of 8-12 year-old kids are ar least on one of social media sites, and most of them spend 2-3 hours on social media. It’s true that social media sites could possibly present opportunities to youth who participate with them, but same as any other activities there are also associated risks. It is important for parents to teach their children how use these sites wisely. And prevent any potential threats; such as, cyber bullying, vulnerability to predatory adults and sharing personal sexual photos. Because young and adult male predators are ruining so many young girls lives by coercing them to send naked pictures. Therefore, it’s leading to terrible results. And it is the family’s job to keep the young people in the family safe and teach them about this matter.
Throughout the duration of the twenty first century, the United States has been advancing in technology drastically. From the developments of touch screen phones, tablets, and computers the United States has been known for being one of the most successful countries within the electronics industry. In the modern day; however, more and more people seem to be skeptical about the easy access to these electronics. The latest concern comes from whether or not the internet is a health concern to minors. Teenagers seem to be more and more involved with technology since the creation of social media and instant messaging. Although social media like Facebook and Myspace have been available since the early 2000’s, minors became tech savvy with other social networks like Instagram and Snapchat more recently. These advancements in technology have caused a great deal of addictiveness to technology in the past ten years. This addictiveness causes people to judge minors and to question their future because of the laziness that the internet encourages. While most Americans agree that young people should have a restriction on how often they should be on their phones or online, those people need to understand that the internet is not created to be addictive and that it was made just for informational purposes. The unhealthiness does not come from the internet itself, it is provoked by the user. The internet is actually proven to encourage minors to grow socially and mentally.
In today’s world, the internet is the leading source of information and the leading way of communication. Every year, technology improves, and so does society’s dependence on it. The use of the internet has made a huge impact in the society causing controversy. Social media can help people to communicate and to be in touch with their families and friends, but it can also disconnect people from reality. This can be seen in today 's new generations, since children and adolescents tend to be more involved in their virtual life than in their actual life. The internet can be dangerous for unsupervised middle school students; for example, since they expose their information, and they have access to everything on the internet. Parents of middle school students should monitor their children’s use of smartphones, social media, and the internet.
