According to Hart (1999), Wilson (2001), and Backus and Chapian (2000) to change the way one thinks it is necessary to effect change in one’s live because thoughts influence how events and other people are perceived. Everyone has different influences in their lives, from families to beliefs to economic situations; therefore, each person is a distinct and unique individual. Model of Health In Maslow’s hierarchy of needs there are five levels of desires or basic needs that motivate people described (Fiest & Fiest, 2009, pg. 280). Starting with the most basic needs for survival the levels are physiological, safety, love and belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization (Fiest & Fiest, pg. 280). As one need is met an attempt is made to achieve the next level. If one is able to reach what is known as self-actualization, the highest level, values such as truth, justice, beauty simplicity, individuality, balance, and harmony are usually greatly respected (Fiest & Fiest, pg. 283 and McMinn, 1996). Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy. The effectiveness has been researched extensively over the years (Dobson, 2001). There are over three hundred published studies about the outcomes of cognitive behavioral therapy interventions. The main reason for this is that an ongoing adaptation of this form of psychotherapy makes it applicable to a vast amount of disorders and related problems (Rounsaville & Caroll, 2002). Personally convinced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is the best treatment out there for any person(s) seeking treatment, I found it beneficial to experience the different and similar therapies in the Stan sessions. It was truly life changing for me. The most important principle I learned is not only are clients unique to their own treatment but so is the therapist in their way of providing treatment. My personal theoretical orientation to counseling is Cognitive-Behavioral therapy. Cognitive-Behavioral therapy helps the client to uncover and alter distortions of thought or perceptions which may be causing or prolonging psychological distress. The theoretical foundations of CBT are essentially those of the behavioral and cognitive approaches. CBT leads to a clear, persuasive, and evidence-based description of how normal and abnormal behavior develops and changes (Kramer 293). The term “cognitive-behavioral therapy” or CBT is a term for therapies with many similarities. There is general agreement in the clinical literature that the techniques of cognitive behavioural approaches to therapy are likely to be effective in treating depression (Brewin, 1996; Beech, 2000).
With these few thoughts in mind Abraham Maslow made up a hierarchy of needs. (Boeree, Page 2) The hierarchy of needs has five levels: the bottom one is Physiological Needs, the next one up is Safety needs, the next one is Belonging needs, the next one is Esteem Needs and finally the last one is Self-actualization needs. As Maslow thought he “saw human beings needs arranged like a ladder”, the most basic needs at the bottom and at the top the need to fulfill yourself. I believe counseling is a collaborative partnership between client and counselor. Furthermore, this collaborative partnership is built from trust and acceptance of both client and counselor. I hope in conjunction with clients to understand the issues and concerns so to help them tap into their wisdom, creativity, and strengths to meet their current challenges. I believe in a comprehensive perspective through which clients can better comprehend themselves in the framework that our thinking about events can lead to emotional and behavioral upset. Moreover, counselors are to provide a safe environment for clients to explore their challenges and identify ways to move differently in overcoming these challenges.
Values, Morals, and Beliefs are components that play a role in an individual’s self-identity. The establishment of these components shape human nature, behavior, and the development of an individual’s purpose. The basis of these fundamentals has contributed to my desire to become a counselor. This paper will discuss my views of human nature, factors of behavior changes, goals of therapy, the roles of a therapist, and the counseling approaches that I chose to incorporate in a practice.
Abraham Maslow’s theory, Theory of Hierarchy Needs, is a motivational theory in psychology that has a tier model of the five things a human needs. Maslow stated that people are motivated to achieve certain needs and that some needs take precedence over others. An attitude refers to a set of emotions, beliefs, and behaviors that is toward a person, thing, or life event. Therefore, attitudes can have an influence on the way a person behaves. As a result, to any type of traumatic life event; it can be devastating. In which it can cause that person to become stressed and lead them to have some type of stress disorder like depression. Traumatic events can cause a behavior to drastically change in a person. Which may lead to some psychological or physical problems that may need to be addressed. However, there are treatments that are available for drastic behavior changes that requires some type of rehabilitation. As stated further by Maslow, there are five levels in the need hierarchy, which are physiological, safety, love and belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization and they are very often of unconscious nature and can be at certain times reserved. Unfortunately, there are not too many who are capable of reaching self-actualization and the ones who will are very creative and acknowledge the world very accurately. An individual however is always aware of the fact that he or she has possesses a choice and therefore he or she has the ability to influence their behavior and personality at anytime (Cloninger, 2008).
I would choose cognitive therapy. I tend to focus on my thoughts and ideas in my daily life so directing the therapy there I believe would allow for the effect to be long lasting. My only fear is if it gets worse there might not be a way for me to come back. I have also used similar methods on a smaller scale to help myself. Psychoanalysis would have been my second choice, just as a backup.
