Leadership Insights Reflection Paper This reflective paper will give me the chance to look back upon all the assignments, presentations, and projects that I completed in RMG925: Leading in Retail Service Organizations this winter semester. Throughout this paper I hope to showcase my expectations of the course, concerns and problems that I faced, strategies I took, and the many things I’ve learned. Additionally, throughout the paper I want to share my thoughts and opinions of the course, assignments, group work, and the overall semester. Expectations of the Course When I enter any new course I normally have certain expectations, what I want to learn and the material and experiences I want to expand on. As this was a fourth year course in my Retail Program I had high expectations. As I walked into the classroom the first day, I was faced with familiar faces, both students and the professor. I quickly found a seat as the professor began to go over class requirements I was excited to find out that there was a retail simulation game and dreaded the presentation that followed. The simulation reminded me of another course I took which had a similar program that I enjoyed and did well in. Furthermore, we had focuses groups, interviews, and a business case to write. Many of these assignments required a group, I was lucky enough to know people that I had worked with before. I was able to join what I believed to be an effective group. Knowing all that I looked forward to
Over the course, as I began to see all the material and work come together, I felt a sense of accomplishment and felt very proud of what I had done over the semester. This learning experience has definitely opened my eyes and opened new doors for me professionally already.
Starting a business can be an exciting time for an entrepreneur but new market concepts and opportunities are useless without the strategies to operate the company to success. Day to day strategies are needed to achieve the organizations goals. The largest expense of any company is usually the compensation strategy. The face of the retail company is the service staff and their relation to the customer are paramount to success. Firms are in competition to find qualified, engaged employees. The pressure for an organization to get it right is the key to competitive success. Companies now look to creative compensation strategies to create a environment that employees want to
Identify two management or leadership challenges for each type of retailer. Are the challenges basically the same or different? In what ways are they the same or how are they
Reflect on what you have learned in this course and discuss how it might influence your work as a professional
This research paper exhibits Trader Joe’s unique business strategy in the management skills that has built a chain of grocery markets, and the understanding of Trader Joe’s business model in planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. According to the MGMT8 textbook “planning is determining organizational goals and means for achieving them, organizing is creating structures and work systems, leading is inspiring and motivating people to work hard to achieve goals, and controlling is monitoring progress toward goal achievement and take corrective action when needed” (Williams, 2016, pp. 4-6). Trader Joe’s demonstrate the importance of the management process in planning, organizing, leading, and controlling in many different ways. According to Forbes article “Trader Joe’s stands out from all the rest of the grocery business because they have proven how cultural awareness can cultivate business growth, and a grass-roots marketing niche that draws viral consumer activity” (Llopis, 2011). Trader Joe’s is a private and a diverse company, and their approach and attitude are deeply embedded in the roots of the business model such as, product packaging, product selection, vendors, business layout, employees, and management. In addition, Trader Joe’s business model is to listen and to carefully respond to the needs of those they serve, and they encourage feedback from consumers such as, completing a simple response card that is available in every store. Upon beginning this course I had both a reaction of anxiety as well as gradtification. When it comes to learning anything new no matter what it is I always seem to question myself if I am discipline enough to take on the challenge. I made a physical checklist to help me mentally prepare for making sure that I was setting myself up for success. Without knowing what to fully expect I made sure to allivate possible destrictions like going to a quite place in my home, re-reading the material for clarity, and making sure to proofread material before I submit. After enrolling also felt a form of gradtification. Graditificantion in a way in knowing I was taking anothr step closer to achieving my
Prior to my participation in the Kroger Delta Division Summer Internship Program I had very little knowledge of the grocery store or retail business environment and all of the moving parts that are necessary to produce a successful company. In addition, I had very little applicable work experience due to being a student- athlete competing in a year round sport. Participating in this internship allowed me to get an up close look at what the retail business entails and how to execute company, division, and department goals and sales plans to over 100 divisional stores and ensure that all of the store employees understand the scope of the business. By completing this internship, I now have a greater understanding and appreciation for the retail environment and can more effectively apply the knowledge I have gained in my undergraduate studies to a real work environment and my graduate level studies.

The Tech Retail Association is a professional organization at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. Membership to the organization is exclusive to students either majoring or minoring in Retail Management. While membership is open to both males and females, the group is largely comprised of college-aged (18 to 23 years of age) females. The Retail Management program’s faculty is also included in the membership. The group’s purpose is stated as being to “prepare individuals who will make a contribution to the retail industry and to society as a whole through quality education, research, and service” (“TRA”, n.d.). Meetings are held approximately once a month. Each meeting aims to address different topics pertaining to the retail industry. Examples of meeting topics include professionalism, industry innovation, entrepreneurship, interviewing tips, and community service. Each year, the organization strives to bring in a speaker who is… and has experienced retail industry. In searching for a speaker, the group looks for someone whom the students will find to be both relatable and inspiring. The reason for this being that the majority of the members of this organization are at a highly impressionable age. By hearing success stories from industry pioneers, they will hopefully be encouraged to pursue their life’s ambitions.
The first thing I want to state is that I learned quite a bit from this course. This is probably one of the most challenging courses I’ve taken thus far in my college career. Most of tasks I’ve done in this course I have never done before and that’s what made it so challenging. I am use to taking courses that require me to study material from presentations and books. With this information I take exams and quizzes. This course was nothing like that. This course had me going out and networking with individuals outside of the university. The networking is the very first thing that stood out to me in this course since I am not really the outgoing/ people person. From networking I did learn a lot and met numerous interesting people that
I walked in, My worst fear had come true I was the last person in the class! At first I didn’t like how I didn’t know anyone in the class but then I soon became really good friends with three of the people in the class. Coach Barbour greeted us by saying “Hi,How are you” this caught most of us off guard but i thought that it was really nice and I enjoyed being asked, teachers don’t ask how are you a lot these days. Coach Barbour gave us a lot of information that day and it was a little overwhelming and scary. I felt like this year was going to be very challenging, not only in academics but also socially. I wasn't sure if I would be able to adjust to this new surroundings and expectations of me. Coach Barbour did however, make me feel very
have learned that my effort pays off. I currently am employed at Hy-Vee and I have received many customer compliments due to the fact that I am putting more effort into my job. This class was difficult, but it has helped me in ways that I could have never imagined.
Prior to starting the assignment, I was extremely confident in running groups because at my practicum site I ran two education groups and one process group each day I was at my site. Going into the assignment, I had an idea which direction I wanted to go in for the video. Being that I do not live in California like my classmates, and I completed my work at my practicum site, finding members for my group proved to be extremely
This course has affected my development as a student in many ways. It has taught me the importance of being stress free. I have learned that using the time and stress management tools and strategies has helped me get closer to my goals. Achieving my goals depends mainly on me and being less stressful. Time and stress management go hand to hand and one doesn’t work without the other. I learned to become better at time management. This has allowed me to get more important task done and put off the not so important ones. This course has prepared me very well for my academic success. It has taught me about my learning styles and what works best for me. Although I’m a visual/ auditory learner, I sometimes find myself wanting to take things hands on. These are some of the things that has affected me in my development as a student.
This is my first semester at City Tech. When I signed up for the group dynamics class I expected to have some difficulties. Prior to this class I worked on various group projects and for the most part it was a wreck. The information given was unclear, members were not focused and/ or the professor was too busy to help. As a result, I ended up doing all the work and not feeling confident in my projects.
