This piece is called, Mars Venus and Vulcan: The Forge of Vulcan, it is an oil canvas done by John Singleton Copley, done in 1754. The era that this piece most represents is the Eighteenth- and early nineteenth-centuries of art in Europe and North America. This is because of the brief use of nudity and the use of children that are shown as little angels. The artist also used a sense of time and motion. It is as if the figures in the piece are moving themselves. The use of 3-D and kinetics allows this sense of movement in this piece. Also the artist used repetition and rhythm. The viewer’s eye is constantly moving because of this sense of repetition and rhythm
My personal thoughts to this piece of art is in all honestly a sense of confusion. Overall I like

The era this piece most represents is the Renaissance art in the fifteenth-century Italy. It goes best with this era because of its use of nudity and shape and lighting. Its use of space of sharp edges and sculpture figures. Also the use of lighting shows an almost 3-D like image. Even though this is a print it almost seems like a picture of statues. The artist also used a sense of scale and proportion in this piece. Every statue is differently scaled from the others. The body parts on each statue did not quite fit with the other body parts. Every statue is different in size, stance, and color. Also the background behind each figure is different from the other ones, in its use of color and detail.
I am very fond of this work of art. The way every part of it is different and that there is no pattern and nothing is the same really intrudes me. The detail on each figure is incredibly real. The fact that someone did this in today’s world is also extremely interesting. By looking at this piece at first I thought for sure it was from the far past, when I found out it was not and that it was a newer piece I was
Sandro Botticelli’s Venus and Mars is a tempera and oil painting on poplar panel, illustrating a scene from the classical mythology story of Venus and Mars, who are engaging in a love affair with each other. The painting was made during the Renaissance, around 1485. It’s dimensions are 69.2 × 173.4 cm and it is currently located at The National Gallery in London, room 58 (Nationalgallery.org.uk, n.d.)
It is a famous example of Renaissance art showing portraiture, realism, and some perspective. In this painting there are four distinct characters. Each has a different expression that shows how they are feeling. There is also more detail in the faces then in any other parts of the painting. Another technique it demonstrates is heightened realism. Whereas before the Renaissance the figures may have been painted simply and in only enough detail to get the general idea across, these figures are shown more realistically. Lastly there is the technique of perspective as shown in the background of the painting. The sea stretches out into the sky and the land in the background is shown how it would look if the viewer was actually
On the right, there is a naked woman as we can see her breasts are well defined. There is a serpent tangled around her legs starting from her legs to her stomach. This piece reminds me of The Magi Asleep and The Flight into Egypt because of the plant like leaves all around the sculpture. Both Magi Asleep and Flight into Egypt have plant like features on them and all three of these sculptures look to be engraved and sculpted pretty similarly. We can tell that this unknown sculpture is Romanesque because even though the demon and nude woman aren’t wearing clothes that we can use to describe the body movements and how the clothing drapes with their figure, we can look at the surrounding objects. The hairs on both figures are unruly and untamed, and we can see how the hair on the woman curves with the waves and the demon’s where it flames outwards. We can also see the objects between the demon and woman clearly, with the way the sides and the curvature of it are evidently
It is a portrait used with oil on canvas. It looks as thought it was outlined or etched in charcoal or very thin paint first, to get an outline of what the artist wanted to depict. Then, he painted over it with oil, mixing different colors and creating bright and dark colors. In the painting, there are four white-hooded figures all in a line. It looks as though they are walking to work during the middle of the day.
Hello Aurelia, the piece of art you chose to review is eye catching. Immediately my eyes were drawn to it because of the bright and bold colors that Romare Bearden used. When viewing this painting I feel alive, alert, and happy. The reason I feel this way is because of how the artist brings bright colors and smooth yet edgy shapes into his painting. The background does seem to have a moving effect. I actually did not notice that until you had pointed it out. Although the human figures in this painting are not completely realistic. It does give the audience the sense or feeling of the painting “coming to life.” I think you did a good job on explain this piece of art created by Romare Bearden. I also enjoyed learning that you like Jazz music.
I chose this work because the several colors and sizes of circles and complicated compositions on the canvas looked as if it has a special context. I can see very careful and thin brushworks in some circles which are overlapped with other circles; in contrast, the background of this work is used a few sloppy brushstrokes because there are some traces of them. The use of color for the background and most remarkable center circle are so dark, but most circles around it are so colorful secondary and tertiary colors. The composition of it is the several sized and perfect circles with the asymmetrical balance which created a mysterious harmony. If I imagine that the piece is a 3D place, I describe that it is a flat geometric shape because I cannot see any shadows and highlights in the circles which give a three-dimensional feeling, but I can see the depth of them by overlapping each other and distance between the circles and dark background. Therefore, there are many two-dimensional circles spread in the deep and wide dark
This work was created between the years of 1574-1580 which were many years after the completion of David and Hercules and Cacus. Giambologna completely created a new and innovative way of sculpting works. Instead of creating static figures like Michelangelo and Bandinelli, Giambologna created intense and dramatic characters. The faces on the figures show great emotion. The Sabine woman is reaching out with a face of distress and uneasiness. The Sabine man on the bottom of the sculpture has a face filled in terror and worry for the woman being pursued above him. The Roman carrying the Sabine woman looks like he is in awe of the woman above him. This sculpture expresses great movement and has a serpentine shape, which was very similar to works from Michelangelo's later career (like Victory from 1527-28). (In the later part of Michelangelo's career he created works with a bit more action, than his earlier works). The shape of the figures makes a helix shape, and the sculpture can be seen differently from all diverse angles. There is an energetic dialogue between the three figures in this work. There are fleshy characteristics in the figures as well. The bodies of the figures are muscular and idealized but they are also naturalistic. Especially the hair on the figures look lifelike and so do the muscles which are accentuated through the contorted positions of the statues. This shows Giambologna's talent and skill in perfecting the human body with such detail and essence. Giambologna wanted to create a sense of balance within this work because without one of these figures in its place, the other figures would fall over. The sculpture also has a sense of weight because the woman appears to be heavy and the man is balancing to keep his stance, but also to lift her up. The Rape of the
The painting appears to be light, open, and airy. The colors in the painting add a realistic effect, and the light falls on the objects in realistic proportions. However, symbolism can be found within the painting. There are a variety of lines in this piece, each type gives a different feeling to the painting. In the foreground, there are many vertical lines and diagonal lines.
This art piece was appealing to me because I thought of it as a peaceful, calming piece of artwork. When I first saw this painting I thought how lovely is the lady with her kids. Until I read the description and had a whole new story. I needed to look closer into the painting after reading the description. There is a gas mask in the ladies left hand as for her children are in their fun gas mask. I liked how the artist makes the painting seem so calm until you know the meaning behind it. This work is not disturbing, but it is mysterious. The work engages you to not only look at it once but look at it twice. To understand where the artist is coming from by painting this drawing. This work does have address of the Hawaiian cultural heritage. Which
This piece is hands down my favorite piece of art to study so far. I have made many mosaic art pieces and have spent many hours making the “perfect creation” of art using stained glass or ceramics. It’s hard work, and this mosaic art piece reflecting a well-known scene in the bible is simply breathtaking. After studying different art forms up to this point I notice a huge change in how people are represented. There are more expression and color in this piece of art as opposed to other pieces or sculptures that we’ve looked at up to this point. I really like the attention to detail that the artist gave to each person in the piece as well as the scenery behind
The piece of art I chose is in the Norman Art Museum and it truly caught my attention to see the different types of bright colors that the artwork had. Its like three-dimensional object that has a dark hole in the center, which I found it very interesting to my eyes when I saw it for the first time. I am a person that enjoys seeing bright, catching colors; I found this artwork to have different meanings because it seems so simple, but with the splash of different colors that has the direction that the colors were going out of the portrait. They’re complementary colors which I absolutely like seeing. This artwork was huge in size so it was very easy to see and this idea of making it huge is abstracted in its own way.
The painting was made during the romanticism period and it appears to be made with loose brushwork. The loose brushwork makes the painting appear as if it was smudged after it was finished. In addition, the artwork uses very bright and vivid colors to depict the image. The painting, itself, depicts an image of a woman, who might be a goddess, running away from what looks like a man, with long black hair, behind a rock. The man appears to be pleading to the woman to come back as his arms are outstretched towards her. The woman is looking back at the man as she fleas with two angels located to the right of her. The image seems centralized with the man located in the center and the women on the far lower right, below the exact middle of the painting.
Unlike peaceful, negotiating Venus, Mars deals with conflict quite differently: with unbridled force, vigorous dynamism, and brutal passion. Ironically, Mars and Venus determine how people handle sexual urges. Furthermore, with an aggressively altering surface; attacking, methane plumes; violent, dust storms; and explosive, gas eruptions, Mars embodies rampant vehemence. In fact, Mars supplies individuals with energy, aggression, determination, and the raw, animal instinct.
It shows the baroque period, because it is a more personal subject matter. It is trying to show bicultural identities, which is a personal subject. It also has an emphasis on irately detail, with the beautiful butterflies in the photo and the wintery background. It is different to the baroque period because it is not increasingly secular. Secular means that it has no spiritual or religious belief, this photo shows spiritual and religious beliefs, when having the butterflies represent your ancestors. By having the butterflies represent your ancestors the picture is explaining how it is common for humans to have more than one culture in their blood. It is okay to show every different part of yourself. You shouldn’t be afraid to be proud of your cultural backgrounds. The second art movement this picture shows is romanticism. It shows romanticism because it has an emphasis on powerful emotions. It’s wild and chaotic with nature. Having the butterflies landing all over her head and neck. It never has any ruins shown in it and it doesn’t have any ghost stories, true crimes, or any tragic love stories in the photograph. The last art movement this photograph show abstract-expressionism. It has a romantic emphasis on metaphysical content. Just like how the butterflies can mean that they have a connection to metamorphosis. It however is a photograph and doesn’t emphasize the large painterly brushstrokes that the abstract-expressionism movement has in its
This painting is divided into three equal parts by the arches in the background and the characters correspond to each of these arches (TV12). The father is in the middle portion of the painting. The lines of perspective created by the tiled floor, draws our attention to the swords that the father is holding and the vanishing point lies just behind the handles of the sword. Our angle of vision is such that we are looking directly at the main figures groups, particularly the father. A single light source from the left of the picture illuminates the characters and also focuses our attention to the father holding the sword. This creates a ‘theatrical’ effect. The background is simple and stark so our attention is focussed on the figure groups in the painting. The painting has a wide tonal range that makes the composition logical and balanced. The colours used in this
