Every persuasive essay is likely to have some form of bias. So, since everyone usually sides with people who are similar to them, there is no surprise that Grant Penrod wrote this essay in favor of intellectuals. Even with the very limited knowledge we have about him, it is very evident that he is more interested in academics than athletics and therefore can sympathize with nerds and/or geeks. Persuasive essays also tend to generalize in order to gain support for their side of the story. Trying to persuade someone that all jocks are mean is much easier if you don’t mention that the nicest person you have ever met was on the football team. In this essay, Penrod uses a lot of stereotypes and generalization, even though he speaks out against stereotyping,

“Big Brother is watching you” (Orwell 2). This quote is from the novel 1984 by George Orwell. In this book, the society is controlled by an all powerful government that capsizes the people’s brain so that there is no independent thought. Citizens are constantly being watched and monitored while all they can do is support them and pour out hate to the enemy thinking the party is always right. Hope comes to a man named Winston, the protagonist, a lone man who secretly opposes the manipulation of the mind. After the plot unravels, Winston begins to show his opposition against the party. The party controls everything in the society and puts everything the way they want it to be, endlessly reminding people that they
Anti-smoking advertisements occasionally pop up throughout our society which is often showing the viewers the harmful effects of tobacco through startling images. This advertisement uses the elements of ethos, pathos, and logos in order to make people rethink about smoking. The video advertisement uses children to make a point across by showing real scenarios on the effects of smoking. It shows that the commonplace for smoking, in today’s time, is acceptable for teenagers to smoke and jump to an assumption that children are starting to try it. Once the children are introduced into this advertisement pathos is
Dylan Shockley Nadia Johnson English II 4 December, 2015 Forgive us Our Sins... Dear residents of Salem and those of the afflicted, In this letter I hope to communicate to you the depth of my sorrow and unending guilt for the tragedy that occurred in Salem. What happened was completely and utterly unforgivable, and I understand that it was something of the Devil’s work which we carried out. The sins of all of the accusers and the jury for selfish exploitation can be comparable to the act of attacking our lord, and for that, we will be forever forced to carry the guilt of our actions until death do we part from this earth.

The essay Clint Eastwood is a persuasive paper written on whether this actor/director is a timeless icon or a spurious miscreant would receive a B because of how this essay is portrayed. This essay receives this grade because of the layout and how it only focuses on one thing and isn’t as much of a persuasive essay as it should be. Furthermore, the essay is poorly organized because of the fact that the writer jumps around in topics and sometimes goes off of the main topic. The paper did have correct APA citations for the sources they used. Also the content of the essay was very strong. Overall, the essay had good grammar and spelling.
From my perspective, I think I fulfilled all of the program goals in this course. The part I believe I performed the best is the cover letter. In the cover letter for the midterm portfolio, I addressed directly how achieve the six goals with evidence and supporting sentence. The part I think I did less well is that I did not make a playlist for project 1. Instead of doing that, I just paste the links of the video. The goal I believe will be most valuable to me in my future as a writer and communicator is the program learning goal number six - “demonstrate and reflect on rhetorical agency”. Before I the class, I have never really understand the meaning of rhetorical agency in any degree. While now, after one semester of practising and learning, I can apply the rhetorical way of writing into my writing pieces.
