Actions can have consequences that can affect your life and future. In the short story, “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury, Eckels, the main character travels to the past to hunt dinosaurs and makes a big mistake that could change his life and time. The foreshadowing, irony, and symbolism in Bradbury’s “A Sound of Thunder” reveals that small actions do matter and that they could lead up to bigger events and consequences.
Travis’ warning of stepping off the path, and killing of animals, sets the tone of the rules. The scene foreshadows the death of an animal, the stepping off of the path, and the toppling of the dominos of time, that will eventually change Eckels’ life. Near the beginning of the story, they arrive at the past and Travis lays down the rules, but Eckels is in a questioning mood. “He indicated a metal path that struck off into green wilderness, over streaming swamp, among giant ferns and palms. “And that,” he said “is the Path, laid by the Time Safari for your use. It floats six inches above the earth. Doesn’t touch so much as one grass blade, flower, or tree. Its purpose is to keep you from touching this world of the past in any way. Stay on the Path. Don’t go off it. I repeat. Don’t go off it. For any reason! If you fall off, there’s a penalty. And don’t shoot any animal we don’t okay”(Bradbury 22) Travis first introduces the Path and implements and tells the rules of hunting in the past to Eckels and the other hunters.
