According to the article “The Real Golden Age of Television”, the first successful demonstration of electronic television was introduced on September 7, 1927. (Handy & William). It was designed by Philo Taylor Farnsworth. Charles Jenkins is also an important person to the creation of television because he created the first mechanical TV on June 23, 1925. (D’Addiro). These two men are responsible for what we have today; good quality television. Since then television has brought tears, laughter, joy, and many other memorable moments to the lives of people. Television came to its own in the 1940’s and 1950’s. During this time period television began to emerge into the households many families. This was something new to people. Never would they have thought of being able to sit in watch entertainment out of a TV screen. Then in the 1964 was the beginning of the “old” golden age of television. The first TV made didn’t look anything like the way TV’s look today, it was a mechanical camera with a large spinning disc attached to it (Kids Work). But as over the years, of course inventions of different TV’s progressed and by the 20th century about 90 percent of our population had a TV in their household(). Television today is mainly used for people take a break from their life by relaxing and enjoying some entertainment.
With the advent of information technology, the ways different aspects of life work and operate have changed a great deal. Media has always had a great influence in molding the culture of a society. There was a point of time when television and radio were invented and when computer was invented and there was little connection between the two. Time then travelled fast then through the age of cassettes, records, VCDs, DVDs, flash drive and then the internet. Media also started to go satellite on a massive scale and there came a point of time when media and digital communication systems became closely integrated with one another, opening the dimensions to digital media.
The world has grown and evolved in so many ways. One of the most revolutionary, man-made, everyday appliance for your house hold is the TV. The TV has brought so much more to a person’s finger tips at a click of a button and flipping to a channel to what they want to see. You can watch different food programs, where to buy things, what is going on in everyday American life knows as the “News”. Or just a show on TV for entertainment. And the list goes on and so forth.
The spread of television has affected American households universally, which started in the 1940s but has continued to make a dramatic surge. There is a trend at that is being captured across televisions in households everywhere. Politics, reality television, social media and public information is being broadcast from household to household. Television has in a way become a mode of how we think and interact with each other. Television is starting to leave that bubble where it was strictly entertainment, now television is becoming a source of what we must believe. The consumer demand for television as spiked dramatically, in the way we view ourselves and perceive others in the world around us is through a television screen. Although we are
What role does television play in society? For decades we have seen many parts of our world rapidly going through changes in technology. Today’s society has been transformed by means of communication and the available information through mass media. Most Americans rely on television for news, sports, and entertainment. Television is just one of the many examples of how technology has changed our lives. Since the invention of the television in the early 1900’s, it has played a very important role in our lives. Having a television set in the home has become very essential in today’s society. We depend on it to entertain us with its sitcoms and to inform us about current world issues. The
In this day and age, television is seen as the most useful technology in the world where we get enough information, entertainment and knowledge. People believe that it is more preferable to have a television rather than to watch a live play in the theatre due to the freedom of relaxation and high level of participation. In this essay, Marshall McLuhan’s technology is the extension of human senses along with Walter Benjamin’s reproduction of art would be analyzed. The main of this essay is to analyze two theoretical concepts and compare them to one another in relation to television and also how these two theoretical concepts would approach television as a technology.
Television is incorporated into my daily routine whether it is watching the news in the morning or a movie at night. When I watch the news in the morning I catch up on current events and other news. On the other hand. At night I watch movies for entertainment and enjoyment. Television is not just changing people into couch potatoes by watching “chasing fast cars, drinking lite beer, shooting each other t close range, etc.”, it also can be a daily tool to learn new things and catch up on current events.
Can you ever find some things for entertainment, information and communication all at once other than television ?. The answer most likely is no. As the matter of fact, research shows that ninety nine percentage of households that possesses at least one television. Additionally the average of youth and adult spend time watch television is more than one thousand hours per year. These numbers are higher than everyone expect. With those statistic shows above, its prove that television is one of the most important material to human life in both sociology and psychology. Since the television was developed, human life was changed enormously. In brief, without television, human life would take a slow process in development and civilization. There are many essays emphasize about the essential things which have a huge impact to our life. However, from my opinion, one of the great example is “ Chronicle of Ice” of Ehrlich. In this essay Ehrlich concerned about the important role of the glacier and it effect to our life by personified it. Moreover, she points out the potential dangerous disaster to our life without the glacier and how society is being selfish . Ultimately, she addresses it not too late to rescue the glacier. Just as my concern about the important role of television .
Club website. He states that while there is a new landscape of television emerging, it is not necessarily a good or bad thing. VanDerWerff describes that because each generation thinks they are superior to the one before it, the format of television is changing to become more personalized to each viewer (hence, the growth television programs). These two articles, similar in message and views, attempt to sway the readers to form similar opinions as the authors. Although Holmes and VanDerWerff both write about the effects of television on certain time periods, VanDerWerff’s article is more convincing due to his effectiveness in acknowledging the audience, valid credibility, and logical reasoning within his
In the article “The Trouble with Television”, Robert MacNeil explains how television is destroying our society. He states in his article that television is a narcotic, not a stimulus. He also says that it encourages us to apply no effort. He says in his review, television results in inefficient communication. His prospective is that people would rather watch television than talk to others. He also says that we don’t talk as much when we watch television, so therefore talking is in the past.
1938 was the beginning of television. E.B. White said “I believe TV is going to be the test of the modern world, and in this new opportunity to see beyond the range of our vision, we shall discover either a new and unbearable disturbance of the general peace or a saving radiance in the sky. We shall stand or fall by TV, of that I am quite sure." We are now living in an age of electronics. Ninety-seven percent of all American homes have at least one TV (Why I do not have a TV?). Not just that, but most homes also contain laptops, tablets, and smartphones which allow additional viewing of media. Television started as an experiment and has now become a franchise. Even though that may seem like an achievement, as E.B White said “we shall discover either a new and unbearable disturbance of the general peace or a saving radiance in the sky”, and I personally feel that television is a disturbance to us all.
TV, more commonly known as ‘television’ is one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. In ancient Greek tèle means ‘far', and in Latin visio means sight. From my perspective and many people of the world television has changed the way we live. Television has brought many amazing things, however nothing is perfect.
Over the last forty to fifty years, television has been a major topic of discussion. Specifically, many debate societal benefits to television watching. One widely accepted opinion is that watching TV makes people dumber. People have referred to it with terms like the “idiot box” and do not feel that watching TV has any benefit at all. They feel that it is a waste of time and people need to spend their hours more wisely. Others are of the opinion that TV is actually has societal benefits. From this perspective, they claim that the development of the structure of the programs now requires one to intellectually participate in watching television. Essentially, the argument is whether TV is a beneficial societal force or is it simply a
What do we really mean by television? The way we watch television has drastically changed over the last fifteen years due to new technologies such as digital television and services providing on-demand access. These drastic changes have had a huge effect on viewers and have “allowed online streaming platforms to dominate and revolutionize the way the audience consumes” (Aliloupour) media, ultimately allowing the viewer to be in total control of how, when and where they want their content. The idea of only being able to watch television on a television set is now a thing of the past. Due to technology, the audience now has a vast variety of options on how they can access content. By using scholarly articles, research in new media and Internet sites I will be analyzing current television and where the future of television will be heading.
