In The Purity of Violence: A Tale of Two Cities, the topic is obviously violence; but it also talks about liberating yourself, how and act of violence can make an actual good impact in your life, how violence is not always a "bad" thing. Liberation has a lot to do with change, therefore after we learn what freedom is, a lot of stuff about us changes. This article also talks a little about Dr. Manette, how the only thing he knew while he was in jail was making shoes, but after getting out he slowly stopped working on shoes and changed a lot of things about himself and his lifestyle. This source talks about self-violence and self-hatred, not about love which is my topic, but it fits perfectly in my research paper because my topic is also about
Anthony Burgess’ novel presents commentaries upon the design of society as a whole, questions of societal placement being indicative of moral righteousness, what it means to be a man, and the deeper, more primal urges of every individual. The Clockwork Orange’s gratuitous use of violence together with the intense reputation of Kubrick’s work raises questions of the purpose of this violence. The question is how is violence demonstrated as art within Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange?
“I done a bad thing. I done another bad thing (91).” In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck these “bad things” happen continuously. Do each of these instants prove that Lennie is violent? In this novel, Lennie is not a violent person because he doesn’t have mental stability, he doesn’t realize his strength, and he has never shown intentional violence.
Throughout my years living in Oakland I have seen violence and distress within my community. What most people hear about Oakland is never really anything positive; it’s mostly always negative. Oakland is known to have a history of gang violence, drug abuse, high school dropouts, teenage pregnancies, and social injustice. Within my research I find myself asking this question, ‘Why is there so much violence in Oakland? And what is the major contributor of this hardship that my community faces? Throughout my research I have learned that social injustice is a major contributor to Oakland violence, followed by the News media shown on television that also helps Oakland have a bad reputation. Most of the violence created in Oakland also comes from
Acts of violence are no stranger to the Greater Chicago Area. In 2016 alone, Chicago had suffered 786 homicides (“Crime in Chicagoland,” n.d.). Although this number is large, especially when compared to other major cities in the United States, it fails to depict the countless family members, friends, and communities who carry the burden of these senseless killings. BUILD (Broader Urban Involvement & Leadership Development), an anti-violence organization serving Chicago neighborhoods since 1969, engages at-risk children in productive activities within their community in order to keep them out of trouble from the streets of Chicago. BUILD recognizes the debilitating impact that a violent environment has on a child and provides the means to help
amount of the violence. My children at times were abused for defending me. I knew
Part biography, part social view, a very thoughtful look into inner-city violence and the rules surrounding it. This book describes how his personal history with violence influenced his work with youth and the programs that he has started to support youth. Geoffrey Canada describes the progression of violence that had happened in his lifetime. He also points out that there is a disturbing difference between what the streets were like in the 1960s compared to those of today.
Violence is a necessary proponent to history. Without violence we as human species would struggle to evolve and the United States would currently not exist. In the decade preceding the civil war, sectional and political tensions regarding the expansion of slavery into new territories grew larger. With the emergence of the Republican Party in the mid ninetieth century, the United States experienced a sectional pull between those who were pro-slavery Democrats, and those who were anti-slavery expansion Republicans. Emotions regarding the expansion of slavery yielded barbaric acts across the country including the canning of Charles Sumner, the hanging of John Brown, and the violence that construed in the Kansas territory. Each of the victims were white, were antislavery, and fell victim to the violence of a pro-slavery Democrat outraged by their actions. These acts of violence swayed many Democrats voters to the Republican Party setting the platform for success for Republican Presidential Candidate Abraham Lincoln who won the election of 1860 with 180 electoral votes to Southern Democratic candidate Breckenridge 's 72.
The Chicago Police Department has gained national recognition since the release of the video footage that revealed the brutal shooting of 17-year old Laquan McDonald. Since the release of the footage, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has faced major backlash caused by his halfhearted attempt to seek justice for McDonald. Recently, Emanuel chose Eddie Johnson to serve as the interim police superintendent. In 2016, Chicago has seen its third highest level of violence since 2004. In the first four months of 2016, the number of shooting increased to 677 from 359 shootings reported only one year earlier. By the end of 2016, Chicago is estimated to have more than 500 killings in the year (Berman).
In contemporary society, the choice to conform seems effortless compared to any other challenging actions. Drabble’s claim in 2001 The American Scholar, “Our desire to conform is greater than our respect for objective facts,” holds a great deal of truth. Within our political spectrum and societal standards Drabble’s claim distinctly emerges.
Gerard Jones main claim in his essay is that he believes that stories that we read to children at a young age that have “media violence” are used well by children (222). In a sense of words this could be true. Jones essay also says that children tend to use violence to get over traumatic situations. He give the example of September 11, He remembers kids talking about the horrid pictures they had seen and then then children play with airplanes pretending to crash them into buildings. There parents on the other hand were much different and shaken up and scared. He says this comes from the children going up playing graphical video games. I believe this is true, with kids who are allowed to watch or play violent games or shows. As in the situation
After reading The Hitman’s Tale there are a lot a life lessons one can learn the story shows a sense of regret from Vincent Smothers the hit man. In life you never want to have to regret anything. For example Smothers who lost his little sister Kelia and his father is something that he let affect him and once he let that happen he went on a rampage of killing becoming a hit man which caused him a lot more pain spending fifty to a hundred years in prison. Once you start something or engage yourself in violence it’s hard to just say I’ll stop or refrain from doing those things. You may find your way into deeper trouble. For Smothers it started it off with one killing and led to multiple deaths of people had people who loved them.
Pages 1- 39 of Slavoj Zizek’s Violence was an introduction to the three forms of violence: subjective, objective, and systemic. One of the main points he made in the introduction was that humanitarians, while they may genuinely want to help the needy with their wealth, they fail to realize that their wealth is a s a result of systemic violence. This is a unique perspective in that people of wealth who donate a lot of their money to those less fortunate are usually seen in society as heroes by those who watch them do so. It is very rare that someone actually acknowledges that they are only able to perform these acts of humanitarianism for precisely the reason the people they are helping need to be rescued. Zizek also makes a point of acknowledging
The type of warfare conducted by the US forces was one of brutality and senselessness. It was also in some ways a politically motivated war. Some of the brutality can be found in the sear number of casualties on the Philippine side. According to the text in the province of Batangas was estimated to have lost at least 1/3 of its 300,00 population due to the war. Also a captain from Kansas wrote: “Caloocan was supposed to contain 17,000 inhabitants. The Twentieth Kansas swept through it, and now Caloocan contains not one living native." (Zinn, 1980) Examples of the senselessness can be seen in the text when it mentions Littletown Waller. He was a marine accused of murdering several Filipinos who were defenseless. According to other marines:
The film Metropolis directed by Fritz Lang is a futuristic, science fiction, drama that depicts a city where there only exists two classes: the workers and the rich. While the workers work long ten hour shifts everyday underground, the rich live above with much easier lives. Throughout this analysis, I will be discussing a behavior over time graph that shows different themes and motifs and how they change as the movie progresses. Of the many different motifs that become prevalent within the film I decided to highlight: sex, violence, man as machine, and anger in my graph. Sex is an important motif to address because there are many points in the film where sexual references become noticeable
Lang’s greatest strength in this piece, is his subtlety in the actual violence committed by the child murderer, according to Armour. Through this, each individual viewer can imagine the horrific nature of his crimes in potentially much more gruesome ways than anything that could be shown onscreen. It also lends itself to uncertainty in the viewer over what actually took place, creating an unsettling feeling, lending greater emotional power to the second half of the film. Hans Beckert is undoubtedly a sympathetic character, just unfortunately one who commits heinous acts against the most innocent of society.
