A utopian society is amongst many things that we as humans strive towards. In an ideal world, a society where everyone is treated equally and sin does not exist, is the definition of a perfect society. However, what many people neglect to understand is that they are striving to reach a goal that is nearly impossible to accomplish. A utopian society is nearly impossible to have because of power imbalances, different values, and the existence of sin. All of which are a part of human nature, and controlling the actions and feelings of humans cannot easily be done, especially without the use of extensive technological devices.
The power imbalances in The Scarlet Letter exhibit examples of unequally. Inequality, as many of us realize, is not a characteristic of a Utopian society. Throughout the novel, we observe many people with titles such as Governor Bellingham and Minister Reverend Dimmesdale. Titles, such as these, communicate to the audience their authoritative role in story. It also allows the readers to become informed about the power imbalances that often occur within any society. Governor Bellingham and Reverend Dimmesdale possess certain rights and powers that the puritan community does not have. For example, the governor had the authority to put Hester Prynne in prison after she committed adultery. Although, we do not know for certain which person gave orders to place Hester Prynne in prison, it is appropriate to assume that it was someone with a lot of power and
In The Scarlet Letter Hypocrisy is evident everywhere. The characters of Hester, Dimmesdale, Chillingworth, and the very society that the characters lived in, were steeped in hypocrisy. Hawthorne was not subtle in his portrayal of the terrible sin of hypocrisy; he made sure it was easy to see the sin at work , at the same time however, parallels can be drawn between the characters of The Scarlet Letter and of today’s society.
A utopia sounds like a wonderful thing. The Oxford English Dictionary defines “utopia” as an “imagined or hypothetical place, system, or state of existence in which everything is perfect, esp. in respect of social structure, laws, and politics.” (OED, 2015, entry 2) But what happens when someone tries to bring this imagined land of perfection into reality? Both in fictional literature and in real life applications, utopian dreams destroy societies.
There are many different definitions to describe a true perfect Utopia. The reason that there are so many people with many different ideas about the perfect world is because the act of making something perfect in a person vision of utopia is created to suit what that creator deems to be perfect. Perception is the key to understanding what makes a Utopia perfect and what makes it flawed. My view of a Utopia requires several different managements and trade-offs of what is believed to be best for the community. This Utopia cannot be strong unless it has a powerful backing of several democratic leaders, many sound and agreeable rules, understanding of peace, lack of war, and desire to work in harmony within the
Throughout history, many utopian societies have been established in hopes of creating a protected and uniform environment. In order to maintain a perfectly equal and errorless environment, some basic human rights are often violated. Many of the utopian principles put in place are based on the fear that the citizens will gain knowledge and notice the absence of their basic human rights. Unfortunately, once the citizens figure out that the government has infringed on their civil liberties they become disillusioned and want to revolt. This ultimately causes dissention and unhappiness throughout the utopia, which defeats the sole intention the leaders had when creating it. To avoid the rebellion, leaders of utopian experiments infringe on
Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel, The Scarlet Letter, is a compassionate yet riveting piece of English literature that supports the movement for equality of suppressed women during a most tumultuous time during the 1800’s. Hawthorne’s use of emotional diction and imagery throughout his novel employs a deplorable tone upon the story. It serves as a stark representation of an imaginative yet realistic example of the indifference of men and women during these changing times. Deeply held Puritanical beliefs led countless of people to believe that individuals, especially women, who committed sins of any type would never reach heaven upon their passing. Men, on the other hand, were judged less severely if accused of a crime. Hester Prynne, the
This society is full of violence and drugs which affect innocent people every day. This society is so corrupted it is really hard to trust anyone. The society of Bluefield is different from any other society. Bluefield was founded to make a difference and to encourage the rest of the world to change. Bluefield offers peace, comfort and a lot of happiness, it is different because it also offers free beds and free insurance. Bluefield will be different from this society.
In the world of The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, I Hester Prynne have been forced to assign relative blame to Chillingworth, Dimmesdale and myself. It is distasteful for one of us to assign blame to all seeing as though we would all approach it differently and I can never know the true feelings of my counterparts. The blame I shall assign is who among us is most responsible for the misconduct in the puritan society we lived in.
What if I told you that your daily activities are damaging the very Earth that supports you? You wake up and shower with shampoos and soaps that contain a hundred chemicals that proceed down the drain and into the ocean. Then, you then drive your car that produces greenhouse gases that hang out in the air you breathe. Then you throw away all of your trash. All of the waste you have ever produced can still be found to this day, somewhere on the planet. If we want to imagine a utopian society, we have to understand the consequences of our daily actions. It is difficult to imagine an ideal or utopian society when our present day society seems to be stuck in a downward spiral. Although, if you look a bit further and really try to figure it out, some great revelations might come through. An ideal society would emphasize on the basics. It would be a clean and safe place to thrive and support its inhabitants. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a society can be defined as “a community, nation, or broad grouping of people having common traditions, institutions, and collective activities and interests” (Merriam-Webster). From that definition, I can deduct that we, as a broad grouping of people, have collective activities. These activities are as ordinary as eating, walking, and breathing. If we consider every human a part of the Earth society, all of these activities are shared with all people on earth. Ideal society includes the use of renewable energy sources instead of

We are a monarchy community. The elder in my utopia makes all the laws/rules fro the people. Everybody in my utopia has to follow some of the rules. If they do not follow the rules they will be punished with jail or banished from the community and etc.
The mistreatment of social groups in texts creates negative impacts affecting the overall development of characters in creating a unique identity. Therefore, it is evident that the marginalization of sinful Puritans through social classes is demonstrated throughout The Scarlet Letter. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s poignant novel, the mistreatment of sinful Puritans in society will be discussed through an analysis of aspects in the text that exclude some Puritans. This will be proven through the exploration of the differences between the social acceptance between the Puritan women against the sinful Puritan, Hester Prynne. Likewise, with the way sinful Puritans are represented in society as seen through the effects of Hester being released from prison. Ultimately, Hester’s choices in regards to the mistreatment of herself will be foreseen as the creation of her own identity.
The United States is currently polarized between political ideals and social differences. However, the one topic that everyone can agree on is the pursuit of an American utopia. An American utopia is imagined as a perfect society with no corruption, perfect harmony between civilians, and freedom of all types for American citizens. Even though the United States is closer to a utopian society than any other nation in the world, there are still plenty of inhibitors preventing a true utopia. Of these inhibitors, the two primary roadblocks restricting the United States from becoming a utopia are political extremism and censorship of speech.
A Utopian society is a society that blocks out any war, crime, hate and hostility to make a “peaceful” union of the people in that community. Many countries try to create the perfect civilization, though many do not come to an agreement on what the meaning of perfect is. Perfect is defined as “making something completely free from faults or defects, or as close to such a condition as possible,” (Google) and because not many people have the same ideas of a perfect Utopian society, there are many misunderstandings in the governing and ruling of the country. The new President and her elected colleagues will talk about five of the most important issues the United States deals with daily.
In the New Utopia, surveillance cameras will no longer be consider an act of violation of civil liberties or an invasion of privacy, but it will be the norm; surveillance cameras will be consider no different than what we nowadays consider a stop sign, a traffic light, or even the posted speed limit on the road way. To be able to stop crimes from happening, there is a need for law enforcement officers to be able to predict that a crime will occur in order to prevent it from happening. As human nature, we always tend to push the limits, if we can commit a crime and get away with it, for most that will may just be enough them to motivate them to follow through.
A plethora of ideals are present within utopian society and thought. The same is true for America and what it stands for. America was founded on certain principles in order to maintain order and provide structure to humanity. Ideals such as freedom of religion, capital punishment, and an economic system centered around trade are directly linked to Thomas More’s utopia. These ideals are integral to a civilization when people begin to break rules, so that leaders have a way out by using the rule book as a higher power. Because Utopia is viewed as perfect and have all complications with humanity unraveled, newfangled cultures attempt to emulate utopia. Not all aspects are mirrored because in order to be new, and an amendment is required. Likewise,
