Vision of the Perfect Utopia

To me a utopia cannot be achieved, a utopia would be “perfect world” where everyone is satisfied. A dystopia can be very far from perfect, as it is in The Giver. The world in The Giver by Lois Lowry is a dystopia because no world anywhere can ever be perfect, the people who live there will never be truly happy and because without choice life can be very boring, as it is in The Giver.

According to wikipedia, “A Utopia is an imagined place or state in which everything is perfect( Wikipedia).” Although this might seem extraordinary, it is cheerlessly not possible to acquire, because no one is perfect. A utopia sounds like a wonderful thing. The Oxford English Dictionary defines “utopia” as an “imagined or hypothetical place, system, or state of existence in which everything is perfect, esp. in respect of social structure, laws, and politics.” (OED, 2015, entry 2) But what happens when someone tries to bring this imagined land of perfection into reality? Both in fictional literature and in real life applications, utopian dreams destroy societies.

A utopia to me is where we can choose what we want, we can choose who we are paired with and our names, there is no birthmoms and we can have our own children if we want, but there is surrogates. There is freedoms to certain things and those certain things are you can have gay marriages, free religion and many more. But there are some things that won’t work. It seems that it is more impossible to create a “perfect society”. Since nothing will ever be perfect. There will always be ups and downs, but that is how life is. In the future maybev there will be a utopia.

When I first began college, I knew that I wanted to major in civil engineering; However, knowing that my major would take up all of my units after finishing the general education classes, I knew that I could not afford to take any extra classes, to explore and expand my own curiosity and knowledge of what is available. Instead, I decided to invest my academic career focusing on engineering. As freshman students began college, many students asked themselves that oh so common and over beaten life question “what is the point of college?,” while others wondered if it was it a place to explore and discover more about one’s self. Well now, thanks to Kwame Anthony Appiah, who teaches philosophy at N.Y.U. and wrote an article “What Is the Point of College?,” he explains two visions which are Utility U. and Utopia U. as well as the habits students possess at the start of college. As students first enter the college world they go through what is known as, Utility and/or Utopia vision; However, one vision would be stronger than the other. A Utility vision is when you want to know if you are getting a profitable return in an investment, while the same students are also act out the role of a consumer. Utility U. possess certain requirements that need to be filled and will pay for expenses in exchange for quick responses such as the desire, to be taught. The definition of a utopia is an ideal place or state. The definition of a utopia is perfect, but can utopias good in real life? I believe that utopias are not perfect or ideal in real life. I believe this, because they can become dystopias over time and they can change over time. Also utopias are usually meant to please only one person or a small group of people.

“An imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect,” is the definition you’d read if you searched up the word, “utopia.” Humans strive to achieve perfection- the perfect grade, a perfect family, having a perfect life, being the perfect person- to be flawless. We as humans, typically desire for what we don't have. After all, our world is not perfect at all. We face hardships, anxieties, pain, and much more.

Both ‘Pleasantville’ directed by Gary ross and ‘The Giver’ written by Lois Lowry clearly demonstrate that a perfect society is impractical. No matter how hard you try, the issues that break down a society will only resurface and ruin the perfect society. A utopian society would not be possible to sustain because Each person has a different idea of a utopian society, People also must feel sad to feel happy, the people of a utopian society don’t have freedom and finally People in the book are deprived of privacy. These are just some of the reasons why a utopian society is unrealistic.

Dennis Prager once said, “Although images of perfection in people’s personal lives can cause unhappiness, images of perfect societies, utopian images, can cause monstrous evil. In fact, forcefully changing society to conform to societal images was the greatest cause of evil in the 20th century.” (Prager Dennis, Search Quote) The meaning of this upscale quote goes to show how our generation evolves into society. In general, everyone wishes to live in a perfect world, with perfect, happy people, where no harm can be done. Each individual has their own way of wanting “a perfect society.” For example, it could be living in a world with no violence or war, and another person can think their “perfect society” would be living in a world of equality amongst our peers. In other words, this perfect world that one would want to/ think they live in is called a Utopia.

In my personal opinion, there is no feasible way to create a true utopia in a world of imperfect humans, but there are many improvements we can make to America today. Criminals will always break the laws that keep us safe and happy, greedy aristocrats will always try to amass more than their fair share of wealth, and corrupt politicians will always lie and cheat to further their own agendas, but the doesn’t mean we can’t make the world we live in better. A few of the areas that we can definitely improve in the most are education, career benefits, welfare, and criminal justice.

It would be safe to say that in a perfect world, Utopian Communities would be ideal. The Socialist Party was fueled by the idea of Utopian Communities, in which communities possessed highly desirable or perfect qualities. Is this a realistic concept? Most would say no; it is impossible to create a perfect society, where there are no problems, as human nature does not allow this. People would try to construct “utopies on earth” via ideologies such as communism. Communism, as we know, is a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs.

An extremely thin line exists between perfection and utter disaster. A society may appear to be idealistic from the outside looking in, but in reality, knowledgeable people living in these worlds know deep down that the society is corrupt. A utopian society is considered “an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect” (“Utopia”). Since a utopian society is not realistically feasible, it generally spirals into a dystopia. This is a society identified by “human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding” (“Dystopias”). Utopias devolve to dystopias for a variety of reasons, which all typically relate back to the misuse of total control and the restriction of independence. A utopia is simply unattainable since nothing is perfect and not everyone in society will always be pleased. Even though rulers use all of their willpower to make their followers believe that nothing can go wrong, but there will always be people who see through this masquerade. The Party in 1984 and the Handicapper General in Harrison Bergeron use these techniques and others to establish their dominance over everyone else. The news station Fox News, specifically CEO Roger Ailes, dictates how his company is run in the same nature as a figurehead in a dystopian novel would. There are two things that operate this world: order and production. The world runs smoothest when these two things are at their maximums. Thus, an ideal utopia would include methods to facilitate work as well as to ensure societal integrity. These goals can be reached through the adoption of artificial intelligence, the development of a fiscal-military state, and the conservation of goods, resources, and energy.

The word utopia is often heard throughout life. This word has come to become a word with a great variety of definitions. It has become a concept that, when fully examined and studied, represents the idea of perfection. The word was first mentioned by Thomas More in his book titled Utopia. (8) However concept was not new, More just coined the term that would be used to describe his idea. Plato’s Republic and Augustine’s City of God all spoke of ideal political, social, and economic states. (8) This term carries on today and is constantly redefined and applied to many situations.
