Some children will line up toys in a specific way instead of using them for what they are supposed to be for. Some forms of repetitive behavior can be more of an obsession. Sounds of vacuum, or the twirling motion of ceiling fans, even with a cartoon character way beyond other children. As they get older their interests can be in numbers, symbols and science topics. Many problems can occur with these problems such as doing daily tasks at home, or simply going to the store. If the child is not able to do this repetitive behavior, he could go into a meltdown, making it difficult to do what you have started. Children with autism may also have sensory issues. They will have a hard time processing and integrating sensory information like sound, sight, and movements. “Sometimes one or more senses are either over or under reactive to stimulation” (autism.com) this could be the reason for some rocking, or hand flapping. There are three main senses that involve the sensory part of your brain: tactile, vestibular and proprioceptive. Tactile system is the nerves that are under the skin and tell your brain the hot and cold, pressure and pain. Some children do not like to be touched, eat certain foods and it’s hard to wash face or hair. This may lead to a misperception of touch and or pain and can lead to general irritability. Vestibular system will cause more hypersensitive to regular movements like moving up an escalator. This will make them apprehensive walking on uneven surfaces or walking up and down stairs. Proprioceptive system involves moving your joint and muscles. This is responsible for sitting down in your chair, manipulate objects using your fine motor skills like writing, picking up a spoon and button up shirts. The cause of autism is not yet known as of now, however, many people consider it a genetic disorder which takes place at birth. Children can be diagnosed with autism by having different impairments such as social interaction, pattern of behavior, eye contact and speech impairment. Parents will be provided by health providers different treatment, different placement in education and knowing about the different risk factor to make a difference for their autistic child now and in the future.

These behavior problems of an individual with autism can vary at times and can go from mild to severe. According to the Autism Science Foundation it says,” Many people with the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) also have unusual ways of learning, paying attention, and reacting to different sensations. The thinking and learning abilities of people with ASD can vary—from gifted to severely challenged.” The causes and symptoms, as well as the diagnosis, and the treatments of autism vary.
Research has found that on average 33% of youths in the juvenile justice system are identified as disabled and eligible for special services. However, there has been little research studying the characteristics or prevalence rates of youth with ASD in the criminal justice system. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) commonly have impairments in communication, social skills, deficits in abstract thoughts and specific interests that could prevent individuals with ASD from understanding legal and illegal behaviors. It is also suspected that the high rates of psychiatric comorbidity associated with ASD, for example ADHD, may increase the risk of delinquency in youth with ASD.

This could be do to the new DSM development of what is considered ASD or simply more children are being born with ASD. Either way, ASD is more predominate in our society today. Research into Autism has grown enormously over the past 20 years due to growing awareness and the number of children and adults affected. In 1943, Leo Kanner first described the classic autistic syndrome. Since then, our knowledge and understanding in this area has broadened. In consequence, estimates of prevalence have increased considerably.
Children with autism usually play alone. Often they engage in repetitious activities, such as arranging objects in meaningless patterns, flipping a light switch on and off, or staring at rotating objects. Some engage in repetitious body movements, such as spinning, flapping their arms, swaying, rocking, snapping their fingers, and clapping or flapping their hands. In some cases these movements may be harmful, involving repeated biting of their wrists or banging their head. Autism is a biological disorder that roots in the human beings brain and slowly damages it in specific ways. The effects of the autism mostly start to show in the early ages of the children. Many parents disregard the change in the behavior of their children and thus ignore the possibility that their children may have some of the illness. The changes in the behavior of the child from the normal growing children such as being too quiet around others or does not speak to you and sometimes he/she even does unusual things like making weird noises for no reason are some of the signs of an autistic child. When parents notice such behavior from their child, it is time to see a neurological therapist.
