This critique will use evidence drawn from comments made by AA100 course tutor Dr Sandra Buckland. Further factors encountered during this learning experience are evidenced accordingly. These include contributions from support agencies and sources of academic improvement. The course has been absorbing and rewarding while the experience has reshaped my outlook on life. Studying with the Open University has also reshaped my private life. This critical review begins with a favourite subject area encountered in AA100.
‘Book 3 Cultural Encounters’ presented a tough, yet stimulating module. With ‘Book 2 Tradition and Dissent Plato on Tradition and Belief’ providing a difficult challenge. This involved a lot of thought which distracted my attention

The task also required an essay plan. According to my tutor I provided a,
‘Good answer with detailed analysis presenting a coherent argument’ (TMA FORM PT3e: TMA No 04’, 2015).
Nevertheless, with the exception of TMA 02, a reflective commentary, my marks had provided an alarming consistency with ‘67’ being awarded for TMA No 04. While fully immersing myself in the subject matter my lack of skill and experience in effective English language became exposed. My tutor further remarked,
‘. . . Need to focus more attention on grammar and organising your work into more effective paragraphs’ (TMA FORM PT3e: TMA No 04’, 2015).
Consequently, I approached TMA 05 with an essay plan and a continually vigorous understanding of subject matter. This became the spine of a first draft. A strategy, to command a thorough grammatical examination, to assist in overcoming my weaknesses, required execution. However, disaster struck as my wife fractured her hip. During the emotional and physical burden of this period, sandwiching in effective study time became difficult. The only remaining option appeared to be an application for an extension to the TMA 05 cut-off date. Ashamedly, the only workable actions resulted in the reduction of the content of the first draft, to a satisfactory word limit and submit the
The art of writing is a complex and difficult process. Proper writing requires careful planning, revision, and proofreading. Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties, and helped to inspire confidence in my skills. As a collegiate writer, my strength lies in my clear understanding of the fundamentals of writing, while my primary weakness is proofreading my own work.
I immensely struggled when writing. Taking my scrambled thoughts and uncoordinated analysis and converting it into clean and understandable words on a page was arduous. I could not express my thoughts in proper academic format. I understood the importance of writing to every subject. It was essential that I learn to condense my ideas and feeling into coherent written word. After much debate, I decided that the best way to improve my writing skills was to take an advanced English course.
After this semester of English 102, at Bristol Community College I feel that I have gained the skill to articulate what I want to convey to the reader in many ways. I don’t just look at grammatical error, but instead I look for ways to make my sentences more effective and concise. Nevertheless, I hope that this strategy will continue to help me improve my writing even further on in the future.
This is the second required general core course in collegelevel writing. Observing the conventions of
Thus, out of fear, closer attention is paid to the organization of the paper, grammar being key to the delivery of content, and overall presentation of the writing. Forever proofing and re-working the draft. Hence, quality is important in any relationship, how we associate, what we say, and how we say it, determining success or failure of the
AAA course gave me a profound knowledge and helped me in time management. It also gave me a hint how I adapt the college culture and institutional integration. This course covers broad areas. The fixed and growth mind set, creator and victim mindset are some of the topic section that I am very interested to know. The teaching not only gave a chance to pass the course but also to adjust myself in personal management especially on time and resource management. The course also gave me an opportunity to improve my academic skills and to build relationship with my classmates and faculty workers. AAA became a bridge that connected and prepared me for the next advance course .The course showed me how I committed for my goal and dreams.
On the evening of Thursday July 23, 2015 I conducted an interview of Alex Benavides- a senior mechanical engineering major at Oklahoma State University. Benavides describes his experiences in his english courses as enjoyable, and notes that it helped him become a better writer. Benavides also states, that from personal experience during summer internships, that there are ineffective writers in positions where clean, flowing, and proper writing is a necessity. Proper grammar is essential in professional writing situations, according to Benavides, and is also often the first area critiqued by professors and teaching assistants. “You only get out what you put in when you write”, says Benavides, “be serious and grind, it makes the difference”.
Some elements of writing (development, organization, style) fit task, purpose and/or audience; others are mismatched.

In English 131 we are expected to meet four outcomes that will help improve our writing. Outcome One aims to demonstrate us how to adapt to various forms of audiences and styles of writing. Throughout this course, I have been oblivious on how to meet Outcome One, but with time I became more comfortable in meeting it. One of the key factors in meeting Outcome One is being able to adapt to an audience which can be done by utilizing the correct vocabulary, tone and style. Another factor to meet is to know to write in various forms of writing by using the components stated above, but also the organization of the text.
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really
Over the course of my studies at university, I have grown and learned more about academic writing and numerous writing styles. I believe there is so much room for me to master my writing skills to succeed and complete my degree and improve my academic writing and personal skills through more practice. However, I have become concerned with my first attempt submitting my piece of paper through the online test in the Writers’ Diet diagnostic tool and was labelled ‘flabby’ in my writing. Analysing my errors and referring to the textbook ’Communication Toolkit’ by Grellier and Goerke (2014), also submitting my piece of writing to Grammarly and paper rater I was able to measure my weakness in the area of sentence structure, punctuation and grammar.
As the semester started, I had set my mind that I was destined to achieve a lot. During the start of the semester, I had several difficulties writing English assignments especially in terms of grammar. During the first week of the semester, I sat down, organized my thoughts and comprehended that throughout the semester, I had to achieve all that I had planned for. As a student of English, I had planned that throughout the semester, I had to improve my skills as a scholar, writer and critical thinker. Now that the semester has ended, I can reflect all the semester activities to depict how my writing skills and critical thinking skills have drastically improved. This paper presents a reflection paper of how this
Over the course of this past semester, my ability to write has improved tremendously. Prior to undertaking this course, my expertise in writing was not as fine-tuned as it should have been. I had never previously been enrolled in a class specifically tailored to writing-- which was quite clear. Upon reading my past works, it becomes apparent that my writing style consisted of fluff, small words, and inconsistently structured sentences. These problems have, for the most part, been remedied with the coursework I have tackled in College Writing. Rather than long, drawn out papers that take an eternity to reach the primary point, my recent work is much nicer in terms of composition and grammar. I credit these improvements to the three primary
In writing it’s important to have an understanding of what you’re trying to convey for your audience in addition to how you you will present your ideas. Effective communication extends beyond having well organized writing expressed in complete and coherent sentences. The style, tone and clarity of writing must also be considered, as they are constantly changing relative to the audience. Again, analyzing one’s audience and purpose is essential to successful writing. Appropriately, when choosing the most effective language, it is important to consider the document objective as well as the reader. In essence, this idea of effective use of language has been the overarching theme of this online English course. Each writing assignment
