What is a hero? Does someone have to save lives to become a hero? Does he/she need superpowers? Well, a hero can have those qualities, but they are definitely not required. “What is a hero?” is a very subjective question. A hundred people could be asked that question, and a hundred different responses would be given in return. Some common answers might be “A hero is righteous,” or “A hero is always willing to help others.” Ultimately, a true hero should always be willing to stand up for what is right. By standing up for what is right, they should also be prepared to fight against what is not. A hero will also need to have good morals to be able to differentiate from what is right and what is wrong. It doesn’t take much to be a hero. Abraham Lincoln was our sixteenth American president. He was an abolitionist that stood up for the rights of African Americans and fought against slavery. Even though he knew that being an abolitionist would spark a huge war, he did so anyway because it was the right thing to do. He fought for his just ideals, literally. Therefore, Abraham Lincoln is a perfect example of a hero. Another example of a hero is Miranda from Life As We Knew It. Miranda and her family were stuck in the middle of a worldwide crisis. An asteroid had struck the moon, causing the weather on Earth to go haywire. Natural disasters struck the Earth relentlessly. Disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, and more. Before long, Miranda and her family were dangerously close to starving to death. On page 328, she decided to sacrifice herself for “the greater good.” The greater good being: giving her younger brother, Jonny, a better chance at survival. Even though her older brother, Matt, tried to stop her, she didn’t back down. Miranda explained, “Well, that was it, wasn’t it? I was leaving home to give Jonny just a little better chance,” (Pfeffer
